Having had my horse recently diagonosed with advanced arthritis i am still un-decided in the use of joint supplements. Although i have just gone out and joined the band wagon of cortaflex because it is the 'one' to be used and the best known. He seems to be doing ok on it, but i haven't seen anything spectacular happen as some say they have upon them selves using it.

My vet has said that they are not really worth it as they are not scientifically proven, typical of a vet... everything has to be science!!

So i have been doing my research of late and have found out that the ideal joint supplement should contain the following:

Glucosamine Sulphate
Chrondrotin sulphate
hydraulic acid
MSM
a form of pre/pro-biotic

But does this joint supplment exist? Because i can not find it any where!! Hardly any contain Glucosamine Sulphate. Only Glucosamine HCL- which supposedly is not absorbded so well by the body.

I found one 'Gluquestrian' which is made in the USA. But i am bit reluctant to use anything that is outside of this country. Plus it didn't contain the other listed ingredients.

So has anybody else been as crazy as me and looked into the ingredients of joint supplements? If so what have you found? Because as far as i can see at the moment a lot of joint supplements are just full of filler and bulk ingredients for cheapness and being sold at high cost!!

Sorry for the long message... well done for reaching the end!!

I use Synequin for my mare who has spavin. it was vet recommended and although it has a hefty price tag one pot lasts about 4 months after the initial loading period. it says on the tub you can come down to one scoop every other day but our vet says most do very well on half a scoop every other day. it certainly has made my girl a lot looser so may be worth a look, dont know if it would work so well for others but it did for her!

Hi,

Glucosamine HCL is much better than Glucosamine Sulphate. "It's suggested that Glucosamine Hydrochloride ( HCL ) has approximately 85% working Glucosmaines compared to 65% in the Sulphate versions."

MSM could be substituted for a potent antioxidant e.g. tumeric extract.

Don't really undertand why you would want pre/pro biotics as these generally only have an action the the intestines.

hi,
have you looked into Aviform Suppleaze Gold? Iv used this on several off my horses, including an arthritic one, & have seen noticable changes. I cant remember the ingredients off hand but they are all listed on their website including the concentrations.

Before you fork out loads on expensive supplement, I urge you to try feeding your boy turmeric. I store the turmeric in a cleaned out Vanish Oxy tub and I use the pink scoop to measure it out. Roo is a 16.2hh TB and he gets half a scoop per day. He has had a fractured pelvis in the past and it left him with a limp but since he's been on the turmeric, he's completely sound. I know of other arthritic horses who have improved whilst taking it too. You can buy a 400g bag from Tesco's for only £1.31. (if you do a search on here, there are a few threads which talk about it too) Gotta be worth a try, eh?

My sister studied ayurverdic (sp?) medicine in India and also recommends turmeric.

really does the turmeric work then?? mine is on pernamax and is great but its £25 a month. I know turmeric is good for increasing blood flow - what else does it do then?
wow if that really works i could save some money here - do you have to get a specific kind - does it matter if shop bought is it processed differently????? sorry to hijack thread OP but this sounds gr8!!!! - OP you can also try green lipped mussel tablets from health shop i have just got some today to save on pernamax

I too am going through the joint suppliment choice dilemma..... I recommend you give trinity consultants a call. The guy is great and a bit like a crazy professor.. he lost me in the science a fair few times BUT he is extremely knowledgeable and unbiased. I started out feeding equine america glucosamine plus msm which my vet said was "good" however after speaking to to trinity it turned out I would have to feed 150g per day of the equine america to get the desired amount of msm.. thats 10 x the daily recommendation! I have in turn opted for a straight msm formula, my mare has no boney changes and we are are feeding as a lubricant for the joints. They will do a formula to your needs, their glucosamine + msm powder is called belgian formula I think but the best thing to do would be to call and have a chat with him. I promise the least you will come away with is more knowledge about your options.

Also to add to this is anyone has any experiences with trinity good or bad i would love to know, i feel confident in my decision but its always nice to hear what other people have to say.

i have been using NAF superflex on my old arthuritic horse and i am pleased with the results, it hasn't cured his promlem but to some extent it has relived it and made him more comfortable. the ingredients unlike a lot of joint supplement has no fillers and is what it says on the tin.

We have a joint supplement that can be used for people and animals.

The primary ingredient is our patented stabilised Aloe Vera Gel. A 4 fluid ounce (120 mls) drink contains: 1500mg of Glucosamine, 1200mg Chondroitin, 720mg MSM and 250mg of Vitamin C (which works synergistically with MSM).

It's quite expensive though and I'm guessing more than you're looking to pay. I do know though that the Olympic team use our products on their horses so they must work!

The vet on our advisory board suggests that glucosamine passes so quickly through a horse's system that it's never fully absorbed, hence minimal results. Aloe vera encourages the immediate absorption of the other ingredients.

If you don't want to spend a fortune (I'm guessing you don't due to your username :p ) why not try adding aloe gel to his feed alongside the supplements you already use - you might find it helps them to work more effectively, of course combined with the anti-inflammatory effect of the aloe itself.

I looked into the ingredients and decided on NAF Superflex. I've definately noticed improvement in my 2 veteran ponies and somehow it also cured by horses "cold back" within 2 months of having him on it... I have no idea how.

I tried Cortaflex on a stiff pony a few years ago and noticed nothing.

I always sing their praises but Premierflex Equine Answers! I sell both EA & Cortaflex, I personally feed mine EA Premierflex as in my opinion it works better than Cortaflex, is cheaper and my customers always tell me what a difference it makes, many swap from Cortaflex to Premierflex.

I can get hold of any supplement I like at trade price but have stuck with EA Premierflex after all the others I tried over the years.

I put my 18 yr old (17 at the time) on NAF Superflex, she wasn't stiff as such, but shes getting older and still incredibly active (jumping 2x this week for example, and not small fences). She is noticeably more supple depsite me not thinking she was stiff before, and looks amazing!

I used to feed 'Joint Aid Plus' very expensive but the change in my old boy whoes hocks were arthritic was almost instant and he acted like a three year old under saddle!!!!! Wish i had known about the tumeric now though!!! i worked out joint aid plus was costing me £1.50 a DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was buying Premierflex HA (by Equine America) "off the shelf" and Bentley showed positive results so I would recommend that to anyone who doesn't have a prescription.

However I switched to Cosequin on the advice of my vet, as the surgery were trialling it, and it had a real "wow" reaction within a couple of weeks!! I would seriously recommend it for anyone who wants to see a significant difference in their horse!!
