On Saturday my horse came in from his field without a front shoe on. My YO phoned to tell me and said that he was fine but that my usual farrier was away for easter so I would have to find another one to get the shoe put back on. A little later his wife phoned to say that actually George seemed quite lame and that she'd cold hosed for me. Anyway I pulled out all the stops and managed to get a farrier to agree to come out on Easter sunday to put the shoe back on which obviously cost me a pretty penny! So after 3 days box rest my horse is still very lame which is unusual even for him so I thought the best thing to do would be to call my usual farrier if he's back from holiday to ask advice before calling the vet. My Farrier called me back this evening and tells me he hadn't been anywhere. In fact he'd been working all weekend. But my YO owes him money so didn't want to have to see him!! I'm bloody livid! I hate being lied to for a start, but it could be that my usual farrier who is brilliant would have seen George at the weekend and I wouldn't have needed him to call again. I know that's a few mights and the lameness could still need the vet but if my YO owes the farrier money I don't want my horse put at risk!! Sorry for the rant, just needed to get that off my chest.
 
I would be bl00dy livid!! I would be having very strong words and looking for somewhere else, that may seem like an over reaction but imagine if it was something more serious, what if she owed the vet money? Would she put of calling them? I wont stand for been lied to, particualy when it comes to the horses
 
Trouble is my YO's wife is brill. She'll do anything to help me and George out and she'd be horrified to know what he's done. I know they don't owe my vet's any money as they use a different one to me but I will not trust his word anymore.
 
My rent for the month would be short by the amount the farrier had charged to come out over Easter, as our farrier will put a shoe back on at no cost.
 
Thats not fair your YO lying to you. He shouldnt involve you in his debt problems! You should tell him that you found out he lied and let him explain himself. Totally unprofessional.
 
I am sorry you have been through this ... BUT...... why didn't you call your own farrier first? Why rely on your YO. Yes your YO owes him money - that is his business, but your horse is your responsibility and you could have called the farrier yourself. I personally would have wanted to make sure for myself that my farrier was on holiday - before I let another farrier anywhere near my horse. also your YO could have genuinely made a mistake, it may not be sinister at all. If you feel you have been lied to deliberately then speak to the YO and his wife and tell them why you are not prepared to pay the full livery money and ask how they would feel - get their side of the story. If then you are still not satisfied, either arrange farrier visits yourself in future, or move yards.
 
Okay so i would be angry that the YO had lied to you and youd had to pay through the teeth for the farrier.. but I dont think it put your horse AT RISK. the farrier you used was still qualified!

No point in trying to withold money- that will make him super mad. Why not just say that you spoke to your farrier and he wasn't away at all, ask him why he thought he was? Maybe it's a genuine mistake or maybe he'll apologise, your regular farrier I'm sure would have charged you for coming out Easter Sunday anyway so I doubt you would have paid that much extra. I see why you are annoyed though!! Grr....
 
I always phone the farrier for myself, but when told that there was no point in ringing him because he was training in Germany (He's a very successful carriage driver, so a plausable lie!) I had no reason to question this. I have had my farrier out today, as it is the farrier that I called out is known to him and is only newly qualified. George needed to have his shoe taken back off as it had been put back badly. With a bit of adjustment to the shoe and the fit George is now sound again so that's good news. I have learnt a lesson not to ever trust my YO again. All he could say today was sorry, that he didn't know why he thought our farrier was away, and he must have dreamt it.
