and doesn't appear to be lame, no nodding, no heat in the hooves but will the shoes be pulled off if he goes out in the field again? Our fields are quite wet & muddy but I can't keep him in until his hooves grow back

What type have you gone for, i had some for a while, but did struggle to keep them on (sorry)

but wasn't necessarily the mud that pulled them off more the twisting action as he raced about which loosened the glue
 
just a crazy thought what about putting one of those shoe boot thingys over the top? Ive never had either but just a thought
 
My friends horse has them at the moment, she only puts him out in a small fenced off paddock when its not mega wet and so far so good. Shes been struggling with lameness on and off for the last 18 months and finally shes found out what the problem is so thinks its a small price to pay to hopefully get him sound again.

when my boy had them on I was advised not to turn him out if it was really wet and boggy is there not a small concrete corral (sp) or somewhere you can turn him out in for a few hours?
