2 horses in the paddock and when poo picking worms seen in the dung of one of the horses so both horses wormed . The horse whose dung contained the worm also has a worm count done prior to the wormer being administered. 2 days later the result comes back at <50??? Can anyone shed any light on why this might be. Thanks in advance x

You will very rarely see actual worms in the droppings, except roundworms from youngsters - the worm count counts eggs, which may be present but too small to be seen with the naked eye. What you have probably seen is larvae hatched from eggs a fly has laid in them since they were deposited, we have seen that in poo this summer. Rely on the egg count, except for tapeworms, which you may see as segments only. Dose with a wormer for tapes once a year.

Sounds like pinworm ,which doesn't show up in a worm count , these worms are becoming more and more common and very difficult to get rid of , would suggest you contact your vet for more info on how to treat as can be a long process.

PINWORM!!! I wanted to be the first to say it but fergus castle beat me to it so I tried to sound louder :P Mine had pinworm a few months ago, I found them in her doo doo then found them wriggling out of her botty bottom (sorry had too much sugar) I treated her with 5 day panacur along with the other horses in field and also wiped the eggs off her bum with baby wipes every day and smothered it in sudocrem, hoping to smother any eggs and worms
