have never really been fond of the idea of putting him out on loan as ive heard so many horror stories of horses being run into the ground, sold from under owners etc. But think it is the best choice for all involved just now. With one sharer dropping out, the other unable to pick up more days and me also strapped for time with college and work (and cash, student woes!!) and fox basically standing in all week and getting maybe one or 2 days turn out its far from a happy set up! Been looking at other yards, most part livery is completely out of my budget, waiting to hear from another about a possible space on grass livery but with the weather id feel awful..

I have had one girl message me already who seems really keen and lovely. the place she wants to take him to sounds perfect for fox. Hacking around chatelherault park, indoor and outdoor school etc, able to transport aswell so he could go to the beach and shows. almost seems to good to be true. Told her i would like to check it out if she comes up and gets on with fox and she said we would be able to visit anytime. am i getting ahead of myself thinking this could all work out so easily so fast? So paranoid.

calming vibes needed please, been an anxious mess about my boys future since my sharer gave me notice last week :(

I've never put a horse out on loan, but I have loaned, and to me it was such a privilege to be allowed to look after someone else's pride and joy, and they all went really well.
I hope you find someone who will love and respect Fox as you do. If it works out, then it'll be the ideal solution to your current worries. X

If it's any consolation I have full loaned two horses, including my current. If anything i am more meticulous with their care than my own! No expense is spared with my boy just because he isn't mine. I have a vested interest in his longevity not because it will likely benefit me (his owners will want him back at some point in the not too distant future) but because I love him and want him to have a long and happy life. There are good loaners out there ;)

Apart from one share, then loan, the gift her the horse experience, every other one has been a total disaster! The things that were different with the amazingly good experience, were that she was older, 30s I think (if your reading this Clairey I have no idea so am just guessing!) she shared him first so I knew they were suited, and she was just allround fab and much better suited to him than I was. She also kept him on the yard I was on. The others were younger people, early 20s usually and I let them move the horse. They were also supposed friends so I didnt do a lot of checks.

If you loan do a LOT of checks, unannounced most of the time. That way if its going wrong you know! And be prepared to take him back at an hours notice if needs be! Do NOT rely on FB pics and updates and the horse being on your old yard. Been there done that, didnt end well, and in fact ended in me having to get my horse out as an emergency and threaten the police to get my tack back!!

On the other hand, I've loaned, and took on a youngish green and a bit unruly cob, and sent her back a few years later working at elementary and a much easier horse. Her owner was devastated to have to loan her, and she did visit a few times, and had an open invitation to visit at any time, with no notice at all. So good loaners are out there, its just you hear about the bad ones a lot more!

But do your research, look into them, add them on Facebook, google them, take ID and references etc, etc. And visit a lot in the early days. Once you know its working, then you wont have to be so conscientious.

thanks for replies guys. loaners you make me feel a little better! the girl seems lovely and genuine. she currently loans a 13.2 pony that shes outgrown and does PC on, have looked on her fb and lots of pics of her and said pony.

CI i have no idea what its called but when i find out i will send you a PM :)

FC youve filled me with dread haha! but dont worry i have no intention of letting fox go anywhere that i havent thoroughly looked at first, hes been my baby 10 years and his welfare is my no1 priority!

Honestly I think that would be one of the best things for you so you can get yourself sorted. As long as you find the right person (get PC references in this case), the right yard, have a good contract and make plenty of visits :).

There are a few yards around Larkhall, but Google isn't showing me any with an indoor and an outdoor. Do you have a name for it?

(I'm interested because I am thinking of moving my horse to a place with hacking that isn't shight and an arena that isn't tiny)

I have had on loan but never loaned any of mine out. I had my boy when I was young (14) and no expense was spared on him, I was thrilled at the opportunity to have such a talented horse on loan, good loans do happen after all we all tend to moan about the negative experience and spend less time talking about positive ones!

If she is still in PC I'm assuming her parents will be involved?

Go see the yard, make sure you meet the YO as well, put a good contract in place and stipulate if you want weekly/fortnightly/monthly updates. Good luck
