I love Coloured Horses,especially the heavy ones,but there just seems to be so many of them now and not enough homes,i went to a sale with a Friend a couple of months ago we were only meant to be going to the tack auction but we ended up going round the pens as well,the coloureds far outnumbered the solid coloured Horses,one pen was full of coloured Horses owned by one chap,we watched them go in to the ring they were all 2/3 year olds,they barely raised any bids and they ended up being bought by the same person who we were told afterwards was a meatman

better they go to the meatman than end up in some numpties back garden.
FWIW....I think there is a general glut in the "bog end" of the market. Nicely bred welshies struggling to get a bid....TB foals making no more than £20.
Overbreeding is rife and the only losers in it all are the animals themselves.
 
I get really frustrated when people say that they're going to breed from their mare - just because they can. If you know the breeding and it's good lines, then fine, or if the breeding is unknown then I think the mare should have proved herself to be outstanding in a certain discipline. But breeding because you "want a ickle foal" is not a good enough reason. And those who say they're going to keep the foal - again, fine - but how can you plan for a potential life span of 30 years of the horse? How do you know what's round the corner which may mean that you DO have to find the horse another home?
 
I to have also noticed a rise in coloured horses about at the min. I remember when I was 1st horse hunting about 7 years ago. I would love to have had a coloured but they were 'fashion' to have at the time and so therefore their prices reflected this. Horse huntin last year nearly every other horse I tried was a coloured, all within my price range. Needless to say I finally have my coloured sport horse I wanted many years ago :) he is amazing! (Maybe i am biased :D) the 'fashion' at the moment seems to be ex race horses!
 
It pains me to see so many horses. Its not just coloureds, its everything... the scrub ponies, the 100s of horses (mostly coloured) alongside motorways... I went to ascot and there were so many fillies with awful confirmation being sold for nothing, and many who didnt meet the minimum amount.

My mare is by Cavalier Jump For Joy and I went on a little recon mission to try and find out some more about her sire. I was going to contact some people on here as our horses are related but then realised this horse has hundreds of offspring.

I genuinely believe there should be laws governing breeding.
 
Yes coloureds seem to be the 'in' thing at the mo which annoys me. There's so many badly bred ones-conformation is crap but just because they have a massive amount of feather they win the classes. I remember wgen I first got my boy there were very few coloured classes .
 
Gosh I remember when you were looked down on as scum for having a coloured. When I was able to buy my first horse it was a coloured as no one wanted them so they were as cheap as chips
 
Unfortunately overbreeding is rife among dogs and cats as well, people buy a bitch, then think she cost x amount of money, lets get some back, they don't
check possible studs for being related and use the first goodlooking dog, sell the resulting pups with no thought as to its future.
Makes my blood boil, I used to breed Manx cats and even by contacting the cattery on the Isle of Man couldn't find an unrelated stud, si I outcrossed to the British SH,my kittens always went with the proviso that any problems at any age they could come back to me, in 10yrs of breeding only two ever did.
I firmly believe that breeders should have to register or be licensed and indiscriminant breeding be fined heavily.
Any new animal I get comes from a rescue
 
I think it's because people underestimate coloured horses , they judge the 'book/horse' by it's 'cover/colour' , you hardly ever see coloured horses in top shows but coloured horses are just as equal as solid coloured ones , most of the best horses I know are coloured , so to people who underestimate them "DON'T JUDGE A HORSE BY IT'S COLOUR!!!!!"
Anyone agree with me?
 
I remember when I first got my coloured pony.... Only just 8 years ago and you were looked down on for having a coloured, and I would often be one of the only people at a show with a coloured. Funny how quick 'horse fashion' changes.

I'm a sucker for a nice coloured, but there are far too many badly bred ones now :(
 
I'll stick my neck out and say I don't like them as a colour but if I found the perfect horse for a job I might buy it but I would not pay a penny extra for the horse being coloured .
But I would struggle with it TBH.
 
Coloured horses come in all shapes, breeds and sizes. They are not all indiscriminately-bred cobs. I agree that there are too many of those around and this leads to prejudice and assumptions from some that coloureds are of lesser quality. Many are thoughtfully-bred with quality in mind and products of generations of selective breeding. A good horse is never a bad colour. :D
 
Agree with Goldenstar. Don't like 'em. Many have wall eyes and gurt big pink noses which I find unattractive. Don't understand why they are so popular - but each to his own! Ok I'm going to hide now...
 
It makes me mad seeing all the coloured horses around here and very rarely are they off any quality. What makes me even more mad is seeing all the coloureds on the local marshland and commons where you used to see purebred welsh ponies. Surely this must mean that the breeding of the welsh ponies is ruined. You see lovely little welsh ponies with coloured foals! Before I really start ranting about this I think I had better not print anymore as this really does make me feel quite angry!!!!!:mad:
 
I think the simplest solution to curb overbreeding would be to impose a very low meat price per kg. If it wasn't economically viable to breed from anything with a uterus a lot of people would be a lot more selective, because it would only be viable to breed horses with a purpose other than meat. Of course, live export would need banning first. And a system in place so anything already born or in foal wasn't just left to starve or dumped. Something along the lines of current meat value for anything born prior to a certain date, then a ridiculously low fixed price for anything born after. Although considering the mess made of passports I don't hold out much hope of a decent system being put into place.
