For sale on all the gundog facebook groups. Whereas 6 months ago there was basically nothing and anything that was there was snapped up so quickly. Now entire litters are being advertised.

I assume the result of people mindlessly breeding with the prices going so crazy, I wonder if they will go back to "normal" now?

I really want a litter from my ESS bitch next year, one of my gundog trainers is wanting a pup from her and depending on how she does shooting this season I expect all to be "sold" before they are even born if she does have one. And that's assuming she passes all her health tests.

Makes me so cross to see all these completely thoughtless litters :(

Sadly it is happening in every breed, crossbreed and heinz57. It seems if a bitch has a uterus it must be bred from :( I have had a few people ask whether I will be breeding my GSD bitch but I have gone backwards and forwards in my mind about what is the best thing to do, and think I have decided to have her spayed next month.

I think the demand/prices must reduce though, given the heightened availability of litters.

It doesn't put me off breeding, as long as I know enough people who'd want a pup from my bitch which at the moment I do.

Agree, it can’t go in forever. It’s not the reason behind me deciding not to breed really, more I don’t want a pup for myself so wouldn’t want to risk potential complications for my bitch otherwise.

My dog fathered a litter during the last lockdown (the bitch obviously couldn't travel, she was in season and the breeder was going to breed anyway, and they sold for well less than what unpapered, untitled, non-health tested mutts are going for). There were pups were booked before birth/before the bitch was scanned with no advertising and there were people left on a waiting list even though the litter was large. I don't know what people are thinking, breeding without homes lined up already.

I dithered about breeding from Ffee but with the market (and thefts) as they are I had her spayed.
I think everyone who paid £2500 for a puppy will want to recoup some money, so will breed from them over the next couple of years. I could see the market becoming flooded.
Pre booked lealth tested pups are a completely different thing, but as we were moving I wouldn't know anyone in the area.

Ive noticed a lot of 'gundog' people on instagram advertising puppies, and I've seen quite a few with pups still with them (unsold) at over 8 weeks. Not just gundogs but the 'in' crossbreeds too

I agree, it makes me so cross that fully health tested pups are selling for the same price as un reg untested pups or cross breeds. I would hope that the public will become more aware of the need to check out the pups heritage, good pups will still be worth more and the rest hopefully drop in price. It would also be good if the 'accepted' stud fee for a decent health tested dog would rise in line with the increase of pups prices. It cost me around 1k to get Toast health tested.

My brother lost his GSD recently to hemangiosarcoma. She was10. He is horrified at how expensive replacements are and I don't think he will be off out shopping any time soon.

My son got a rehome by being in the right place at the right time and I got a JRT from a rescue 10 years ago.

Puppies, puppies everywhere yet nothing realistically priced. Will there be a glut hitting the rescues in a while?

Although they stopped advertising dogs during the first lockdown moggie kittens were being advertised on DoneDeal for €300 a few months ago. My neighbouring farmer and I strongly suspect the cat we have “acquired” between us was dumped.

I’ve just had a look on DoneDeal and moggie kittens are being advertised between €30 and €350. One person is asking €200 for a six year old she picked up as a stray!

£2k buys you a teacup Yorkie (who’s mother died from heart failure when pups were five weeks old.... ?).

My friend just bought two rag doll kittens for £1200 each. They both ended up in intensive care within 7 days with severe cat flu. One nearly died but thankfully they have both pulled through. They spent several days in a local 24/7 animal hospital... you can imagine the bill!

and the sanctuaries are overrun
Not yet. Or not yet where I am anyway. A lot of people did rehome from rescues as well as a lot of people buying.

Whether or not the rescues are able to stay in those homes when people start going back to the office full time and schedules change remains to be seen.

Thankfully not around here either, particularly. Although even if they are you can’t adopt anything from them.
Yeah a lot of places were struggling for a long while there. A couple of local rescues were doing facetime home checks to try and just do SOMETHING which sounds like a nightmare. But thankfully they seem to be getting back to normal-ish now.

The sanctuary I work at was mostly cats needing homes which don't require the same level of scrutiny as dogs RE: garden space, fencing etc so we managed to get most of them placed. I think we only have maybe a dozen left with more complex needs after having 100+ come through the doors last year.
