Well, I've been in Africa for 3 weeks doing some fairly awesome stuff and getting a tan (despite slathering factor 50 suntan lotion on 3 times a day- my tan lines are very epic!) :D Reg and Al meanwhile have been swimming their way round Norfolk...

First up was the Royal Norfolk Show, where they did the RoR class. They were expecting to do fairly badly but it's all experience and a lot of fun. Reg was scrubbed and polished within an inch of his life and Al was then treated to the same... Eventually!

(very PC here... And yes, she's naturally that tanned. Feel free to dislike her!!)

They rocked up and began their warm up in the big arena, where there was a mild rave when one horse had a tantrum, set off another who's poor rider came off, which spooked Reg and Al only just clung on by the skin of her teeth. Good start! Progressed to the smaller warm up, where Al got off and walked him- 15 horses in a 20mx40m arena had Reg all of a twitter. At this point, Team Reggie's (it's ever expanding- he had a fan clb of 10 people watching him...hearts were sinking! But once he was in the arena he settled and went really nicely. Al felt quite out of place as she was the youngest in there on the only horse in a snaffle wearing clearly not-showing gear!

This was compounded when they were called in 2nd (yes!) and she thought they were asking her to leave the arena... She asked the lady pulled in 1st if it was in reverse order! The ride judge rode him (Tiny Clapham) and told Al he was beautifully schooled and a pleasure to ride, cue big :D :D :D :D He was an utter tit for the conformation judge though, refused point blank to stand still and did lots of 'strike a pose' things... Next time, Al is going equipped with many polos to bribe him with, lol!

He was knocked down to 6th, as the conformation judge though he had a curb, but the ride judge said she'd have had him him win if it was up to her!!!!!! :D :D So very very proud of them both :) And quite sad I missed it :(

Onto PC area stressage! They were doing the intermediate test, with some misgivings as it was blooming complicated and very technical for where he's at in his schooling... 10m half circles in canter, lots of transition in awkward places and general difficulties! The going was absolutely bottomless and he was last to go in his section and he is no a lover of deep going, ever.

The test was sweet enough, with some stunning canter work but his trot was quite laboured which made him tense so less soft and supple than he would have been. Al was pleased with his attitude though- he tried his socks off for her when he was within his rights to say that it was too hard for him. They got 63%, which left them in the middle of the section. BUT the test sheet has five 8s (for his canter) and several 7s as well with the (very accurate) comment that he's a lovely horse with lots to offer, but he's not established enough in his trot to offer his full potential on deep ground. Very positive, and Al is over the moon with her pony :D

And finally, the new arrival...

Meet Bee :) She's a 5yo ex-racer, bred by Reg's owner and is Reg's polar opposite! She's 15.2hh or so, and looks like a connie cross TB rather than the purebred she is... Al really likes her as she seems to get on with slightly quirky mares (because she is one herself, lol!).

It's early days at the moment as she's just being restarted so expect progress reports with many pretty pictures (she's a stunner!). Her sire is Silver Patriarch, and she's quite like him in personality it seems, so slowly slowly catchee monkey and all that and we'll see what happens.

Reg looks very smart all polished in his fancy browband :D

The new one looks fab, surely a contender for intermediate workers if Al could bare to do anymore showing :D

I read Al's report too, sounds like a successful day, lots of hugs for Reg!
New arrival looks very promising, can't wait to see how she progresses, do you plan to event with her or is it still too early to decide?! :D

Ah, another Silver Patriarch who is no good on the racetrack... ;)

Love the pics. I can wholeheartedly agree that RoR warm-up/rings can be crazy. Someone getting bucked off is the norm and I was rather concerned to see several of the horses in my class being ridden for hours beforehand with a body-protectored jockey! Mine was nothing special but was always pulled right up the line after the ride (think the judge was just pleased to get on a quiet, well-schooled one!) and at least behaved when all 40 horses in the ring on one occasion were asked to canter at once .

Yes, I hate her tan!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love the photo's, so tanned, very jealous :D

New one looks very smart indeed :D

She's sickening... The sun threatens to shine and she looks like she's been in the Bahamas for 6 weeks! And thank you :) She's very cute, if a little feisty!

She's reading over my shoulder and pulled a very unimpressed face at that... But I thought that too- she's chunky for a TB, but small too. Al refuses to contemplate future careers though as she reckons it tempts fate :o And he scrubs up well for a scrappy TB , although I'm not sure Al has forgiven me for going away in her hour of need :D :D

Very pretty mare, out of interest whats her temperament like? I used to work with a horse by the same sire

Oops posted to early! Stupid phone! The mare I worked with was pure evil! But very pretty.

Um, she's pretty sweet and nice to do- she can be sharp, but she's only 5 so that's pretty excusable. She's got a cute face, it's very pony I think :) Thank you! Hope she keeps her sweet streak then

It seems to have been a bonkers day- showing is a funny old world! Yes, many many hugs for Reg- he's so cuddle-able, you'd think he was a little fat welshie!

Too early to decide really- see how she enjoys being a riding pony first and then go nice and slowly with her. Hopefully she'll like eventing though!

She didn't really like it very much! Which of yours is a Silver Patriarch baby?

Reg is pretty solid, but all those horses overtaking in a small space wound him up no end... 2 fallers in 5 minutes was a little alarming! Once he was in the ring he was ok if a little onwards bound!

So do I... She's browner than me, and hasn't left Norfolk  My excuse is I was applying factor 50+ suncream twice a day...

Fantastic!

Loving the gorgeous grey too!

Thank you :D Team Reggie (reckon we need baseball hats with that on...) was very proud, but if she comes good we may have to be Team Racehorse :O

None of mine, Lolo, but I've known a few. I rode a couple in training which were both worse than useless (one even had a run out in a bumper race which is theoretically impossible!). Nice 'people' but no racing instinct whatsoever. However another one I know won its first two BE Novs and was second in its second intermediate so there may be hope!

Hope you had a fab time in africa :D

Al is stupidly brown, I refuse to believe its all natural, I havnt even worn shorts yet this year

Reggie pony looks very good as a show pony, obviously as a second career

Sadly we didnt even get to wave at reggie pony at areas as we were shoved up in a reject corner away from every one else :o but the ground was horrible so massive well done reggie pony for having nice canter work.

New one looks lovely and very pony like  just the sort of thing I'd be after when I finish uni and very jealous its from reg's owner as she sounds lovely and a great person to have as an owner.

What a lovely report. I like the new one, one of girls on my livery yard has bred two Silver Patriarch full TBs but the bay one looks like a warmblood and the grey one more like a middleweight hunter!

Lovely report and like the look of the new one!!

I had a similar experience with mine in an RoR on sunday, 13 ex racer, a few who were alot nuttyer than some and then the judge asked us to gallop together! Think she might have been the only one that enjoyed it!!

That's impressively bad- fingers crossed she likes eventing more than racing though! Will cling to the hope there... :D

It was amazing but very different and a bit shocking- we're so lucky over here as pretentious as that sounds! And I know. She's just sickening...

He quite likes preening with people cooing over him so I think he might like it- got another attempt at qualifying coming up so who knows. We still can't find the curb he was marked down for, but he was being such a tit we reckon she might have hammered him for that and given it a different reason beyond 'your horse is a tit' :D :D

Al said you were tucked miles away- NN was ensconced in the middle :D It was grim, and the scores were pretty low in most of the arenas- hardly any horses coped with the ground well.

Yes, Al is stupendously lucky to have someone like her as an owner. It's funny, we've known of Bee since she was born as we'd hack past where she was turned out and watch her grow up and Al would always say how much she'd like to be able to ride her when she was older... This was when she was 13 or so! Funny how things work out really :)

What a lovely report. I like the new one, one of girls on my livery yard has bred two Silver Patriarch full TBs but the bay one looks like a warmblood and the grey one more like a middleweight hunter!

Thank you :) And she's continuing that trend of only pretending to be a TB it seems!

It was the standing and waiting bits Reg got tizzed by- he was beyond being distracted with polos, and was told if he didn't stand still he'd be thrown out by the confo judge... There was a group of children standing behind the line saying "3... 2... 1... GO!" repeatedly and it was sending him sky high!

I think the

Great to see you back!! Would love to hear more about your time in Africa! Very jealous about Al's tan - I go pink then white again. :(

Reg looks fab and 6th is brilliant for first time at County level (I think it was first time?).

Love the new girl. :)

I might do a soapbox report at some point :) And so am I- she looks like she'll be pale as she has lighter hair than me and green eyes, whereas I'm very dark. But no. She browns, I burn... Grr!

Yes, we were fully expecting dead last :O If we can convince him to stand still he might actually do very well  He was like a ADHD child on blue smarties though!! And yep, first time for both of them!

Loved your report, your sister looks fab in the pics and so does Reg. Looking forward to updates on your new addition.

Thank you :) There'll be lots in all likelihood, so you may regret that statement :D :D

Well Done with your beasty at Norfolk!

As to Silver Patriachs. I have work with a few. The geldings you couldn't get more genuine horses if you tried. We currently have the highest ever rated SP in the yard - Silver By Nature. His year younger full brother who is useless in comparison and then we have a mare by SP who a witch to be perfectly honest. Will bite, kick, nap, spin, plant herself, hangs like a gate, is worse than useless on the track and isn't even pretty to boot BUT her mother was the same, if not worse so I am not blaming SP for her failings.

Ooo so exciting I decided to post rather than lurk

Must say I also have tan envy as whilst as I have wonderfly bronzed arms and shoulders my legs are so white I spooked a clients horse when I wore shorts the other day :( and my vest top shaped tan lines really do not go with anything *huff*

I am beyond jealous of your new one. Worked on a yard where we had a grumpy, ugly looking mare with quite nice breeding produce the most stunning SP foal. Huge leggy filly that made 17hh but had the prettiest most delicate face I've ever seen. Very sweet most of the time but sharp as I've known when she had a 'chestnut mare' moment. Must agree with the others though - not an ounce of talent as a racer - never made it onto the track! Was loaned out as a broodmare in the end I think. They do tent to have a huge gallop, think it's more the running company they don't like! If the new one is of the same ilk will probably be lovely clever type though which would suit eventing - massively excited for updates!

He was a clever pony! We thought he was quite rotund though, and he looks about half the size and twice the height of the others...

So far, Bee has been quite quirky but not nasty in any way and is pretty sensible on the ground- especially as she's only 5! She's very cute about things- she pricks her ears and you can see her thinking things through. Her mum was a nice horse so finger's crossed she has that side...

Gorgeous, gorgeous horses :) :)

Thank you :) Bee is much more appropriately sized though- she's over a hand smaller than Reg and much narrower so it's a bit odd seeing Al look right on both of them!

Keep posting :D Everyone in here is very friendly!

I have awful tan lines which encompass racer back vests, long sleeves rolled up, bra lines and one halfway down my back from where we swam in the sea. Al spent most of her study leave sunbathing (dedicated student) so is very brown all over ><

Reg was the same as that- he can't half shift with an enormous stride length- but he just didn't really get why he was there! Bee was of a similar opinion, not a huge fan of it and she's so small when you think she's next to horses like Reg... I hope she likes being a riding pony as it would be nice for Al to be able to bring on another ex-racer with Reg so she can put into practise all she's learnt with him.

brilliant! :D loving the new one!!

:D Thank you! I'm glad things are going well for you and your new boy, he looks very sweet :)

Go Reggie! He looks fab and what a great result. Pah! Curbs don't really matter ;)

New pony looks lovely. I too knew a completely useless racehorse by SP, but he was a very cute person, so good luck with her and I shall look forward to the updates.

As for the tan - that's just not fair. As someone who burns and peels, then burns and peels again, I cannot abide people like that, so in future Al must be fully dressed in all photos otherwise I may have to boycott!

I had a gelding on loan for a while who was by Silver Patriarch and he was lovely. Would have loved to have kept him, but things didn't quite work out for us.

R and A look *awesome* :D

Huge congrats to all, know how much effort you guys put into this :)

Love the look of the new one!

Reggie looks amazing! :D Al looks like she's had a better summer than anyone else in England ;) Love the new pony, greys are my favourite.

ps - some judges don't seem to spot curbs and this gets mentioned at conformation training sessions so perhaps sometimes people think they see a curb just because they don't want to miss one if you see what I mean.

more showing updates soon please!!!

We're not sure about the curb thing, as we have yet to find it- he has a lump on his leg from a racing injury, but it's not a curb as it's in the wrong place? He was being such a tit though, he deserved to go down the line for that alone!

SP babies seem to follow a pattern here! There's be many updates- those photos are a week old now, and she's getting more established every time she's ridden. It took a year to get Reggie to where she is now really on the flat, and having now watched Al ride Bee I can see how much her riding has improved.

I had a gelding on loan for a while who was by Silver Patriarch and he was lovely. Would have loved to have kept him, but things didn't quite work out for us.

I'm sorry it didn't work out for you :( All the stories of lovely SP babies are very encouraging though!

Thank you :) I think so too (proud big sister alert!) :D :D He's a credit to Al's hard work in my very biased opinion, and I'm so pleased it's coming together for them now.

And she's very cute, although she really does not look full TB at all! No one is going to believe she is a ex-racer, whereas Reg still does a very convincing impression :D

Just seen this reply! Al is one of those awful people who does just go brown instantly- when she was little she had a cremello pony, and she'd be mahogany and he was a odd shade of yellow and together they looked revolting :D

Thank you :) He was a very different type to all the others- a bit bigger still, but he looked less chunky. In the photos, he looks almost fine-boned in comparison when we know he's pretty solid... I like greys too- hoping she stays quite steel grey though or we'll be endlessly bathing her!

Showing updates may be fairly irregular... Eventing is too much fun, and showing was quite dull compared to XC :p ;) They're doing the Wayland show which should be a bit less buzzy (in hindsight, going straight from local level unaff. classes to a big county show was a brave/mad move!) and then will see what happens.

Normally a lurker but felt compelled to respond. Another with a SP mare who doesn't look full TB! I'm glad she's not the only miserable toad around then.
