....and we can finally believe that we may possibly see the back of our heavy turnouts! How did you rate your winter rugs? I am hoping to get Springy a new heavy/middle weight turnout for next winter in the sales but want a really decent one, not bothered about colour etc but want a good fit and waterproof and robust.

She is a fairly chunky IDxTb and I want a full neck as she is a hippo at the best of times. Her mane has been fairly badly rubbed as well so any full neck/detachable neck that suits chunkier types? Anyone bought one for this winter and really pleased or disappointed? Seriously considering splashing out on a Rambo or Fal - which model would people recommend

Thanks!

i had this one for my cob(weatherbeeta).
she has worn it all winter with a blanket clip.she has been toasty and dry.it has also been worn in the stable when i have worked late and been short of time.
there is no wear and tear on it at all,it has been brill and i have not had to use the spare one.it has not rubbed her in any way either.

(it may have been too warm if i had not clipped so much off)
i cant praise it too highly

I have the fal because I think the neck cover is the safest. It is tough but after 2 years the elastic on the neck needs replacing. It is a detachable neck cover and where the neck cover joins it has rubbed the mane but she is a sensitive chestnut!!! Other than that it is by far the best rug i have ever bought. I have not tried the full neck rambos.
She also has a rambo MW and HW without necks for the warmer days. I like the high neck design as i have found that the standard design cuts into their necks.

Fal need to combine the high neck of rambo with their safe neck cover and they would be onto a winner!!!

Mine had a Fal on for most of winter as always was impressed, had a slumberdown on for 1 minute and it was s*it so def not having one of them again, also rate Bucas rugs.

Weatherbeeta ( orican ) and still going strong after 3 years, i have it washed and reproofed in the summer, last one lasted 4 yrs, never ripped, but the lining did seperate, sold it at auction and still got £20 back, at about £70 they are a bargain, and they double up as a stable rug, just turn the neck back on them, and they dry out quicker too 10/10 imo

Bought a Weatherbeeta Orican just before Christmas and am really pleased with it.

Her Fal Pro Bulldog had lasted 9yrs apart from the fittings wearing through a couple of times, so another great rug make.

Ditto the Weatherbeeta Oricans. I like the old style ones that they brought back out this last winter with the original side gussets not the Freestyle ones. I've had Weatherbeetas for years and they seem to last forever

tesco rugs!
got one as a present and my big TB rug trasher hasn't trashed it yet!
and its lasted 2 winters so far.
where as shires/mark todd/rambo....he killed fairly quickly
and it fitted really well and didn't rub his mane
was very impressed by it
would get one again

Well, I've a bit of a rug buying addiction...so here goes;
Weatherbeeta - have a number of these, fit all three of mine fairly well (not at the same time

) and are properly waterproof. My horses appreciate the larger tail flaps too. On the down side, I find that they don't last as many years as some...the lining flattens a bit when you have them washed, but then again, they're relatively cheap. The leg strap clips are also prone to sticking open or shut - so I have to use a hoofpick to open/close them.
Rambo - last forever (I still have one I bought about 14 years ago, and used it on one of mine briefly this winter). The normal ones fit my TB types well, but not so much my deeper-bodied Shire x TB. I have also known Rambos to blow clean over my horses' heads...so not wise if you live in a windy place.
Masta - bought one, fitted badly (didn't sit right on either TB type youngster or Shire one), leaked like the proverbial sieve, and belly straps started to fall off, as did fleece on withers. Nice leg strap clips, though. I had to buy a new rug to replace it within a year. Never again!
Premier Equine - bought a few, nice and deep, and made of good quality materials. Fit all three of mine well, and particularly good for Shire x TB as very deep. Bought a 450g with detachable neck in the sale - and very pleased with it so far - although my one criticism is that the tail flap is small and lets the wind blow up my poor horse's bottom.
Never had any other make - although at my livery yard a lot use Fal- but they never seem to fit properly, and ride forwards.

Rhino Wug! Can't recommend highly enough.

My mare is pretty deep in the chest & a lot of rugs in the past have slipped back & rubbed her shoulders. They've also not been at all hardwearing.

I got her the Rhino half neck & it has been absolutely brilliant. No rubs, never slips despite her being a yob in the field. No tears, utterly leak proof & the leg straps etc are really good. Nice deep tail flap & the rug 'hugs' the body, fits around her bum nicely, fits under the tummy nicely & allows the horse freedom of movement.

Each time I've taken it off she has been toasty warm & no leaks. It's outer is a 1000 denier polypropylene & it has withstood mine giving it a good beating over two winters so far.

The other thing I like is rather than coat the outside layer, they've added a waterproof mid layer so even if the top layer of the rug is ripped or torn then the horse will still stay warm & dry.

Midway through last winter mine was on very exposed ground & it protected her really well. (I have the medium weight btw)

They also do a full neck version http://www.horseware.com/turnouts/rhino/turnoutsplus.asp

If it's anything like the medium weight half neck then it's worth it's weight in gold. (mine is also nylon lined so you get a nice shiny coat too!

)

I got mine in the sale (last one of that type in 5'9) & it set me back about £70/£80 instead of £100 I think.....

The only turnout I'd buy now. They are amazing.
