Hi All,

Yet another animal I was interested in has gone before I get a chance to look at it. What really upsets me though is that I made an appointment to see the animal tomorrow afternoon, the earliest possible time the seller could see me. I come in tonight to be told by the OH that someone had turned up with a trailer and cash and bought him, no vetting, no nothing. I know people are entitled to sell their animals to whomever they like but is it not a bit off to tell me the earliest they can let me see him is tomorrow and sell the animal the evening before? Or am I just too angry and dissapointed to be reasonable? We were really confident he was the one. :(

I would say that's quite normal really, reason you couldn't see him sooner was no doubt because they had other people lined up, very gutting though

I once went to look at a horse and it wasn't until I queried the white socks that I was sure weren't in the pic I saw originally that they admited to having sold that particular bay mare but thought I might like to look at this one instead!! Was a professional SJing yard too

It is a real pain but if you look at it from a sellers point of view most people would do the same. You have no idea if people are time wasters or that it may be their 'perfect' horse or not quite what they are looking for. A sale is a sale and if you are happy with the new home why wouldn't you sell. There will be others, good luck.

I suppose I am being a petulant cow - we really had high hopes for this little guy though. What really narks me is they sounded so keen on us, saying he had been abused in the past and wanted him to go to a nice home where he would be treated with care and then tell me some sod turns up with a trailer and an envelope of cash, whaddayagonnado?! I hate being spun a line. And yes, I'm narked because I was already in love with him, spolit baby that I am! :)

Yeah, was a bit of an eye opener! Fortunately I hadn't travelled far or I would have been seriously hacked off

Funniest thing was I know their vet (friend of mine as well as my vet) and had been chatting about going to look at this horse so when I realised I said "oh, so this is the one *** vetted three weeks ago then?" The look on their faces was priceless as they didnt know the connection until then :D

Tend to agree with the above, but I do understand your frustration at this happening, particularly if like me you tend to do what you say on the tin, never mind, it wasnt meant to be, there will be another somewhere, there always is ;) x

I'm afraid to say I'd do the same - I'm selling at the moment and had 4 people come and see my horse and then not even bother to let me know they don't want him. I've even been foolish enough to take afternoons off work to fit into their schedules!!!

If someone turned up tomorrow with the cash I'd let him go (unless I had doubts about their ability to care for him), regardless of whether I had someone else booked in to see him later in the week.

MegaBeast - same happened to me, only I got shown a bay mare when I had travelled 1.5hours to see 2 chestnut geldings!!! And the horse they tried to sell me was twice my budget. To add insult to injury I got a massive crack in my windscreen on the way back - fuming doesn't even cover it!!!

So sorry hun :(

Happened to me. There was a gelding I was to go and see. Sounded just what I wanted, spoke to the woman a number of times. The earliest she could let me see him was the Sunday. I was sooooooooooooooooo excited :D. She sold him on the Saturday :(

When I was looking for my cob that happened to me several times - I couldn't go to look except at weekends.
When I saw Becks on HQ late on the Tuesday night I knew I HAD to get to see him......I called the seller and he was totally honest & said someone was coming 1st thing on Saturday but I was welcome IF I could get there before that.
I booked my last day's leave that year for the Thursday and travelled the 200+ miles (round the M25 and everything!) and fell in love at first sight - he was everything I wanted and more, pics just didn't do him justice.
When the right horse comes along it will all happen for you. Just take your time. Best of luck!

Ta everyone! I feel a bit better today. I hate horse shopping, its as bad as house hunting!
Don't say that! I'm just about to seriously start house hunting! Saw one last year (we didn't really have enough money saved but fell in love) but got sold... 2 days later there was a "To Let" sign outside. :|

As people have said (and I know it's a total cliche and not what anyone wants to hear (so sorry!)) It obviously wasn't meant to be. You'll find a horse soon and wonder why you were so upset about t'other one! :)

House hunting is truly miserable - we had the joy of looking during Ireland's housing boom, where you had to queue (yes, queue!) to get into a hovel whose price had jumped 10 per cent while you were waiting to shuffle through the front door, where an estate agent would be waiting to tell you you should just take what you are offered and be grateful! Seriously, some one did actually say that to us - OH had to drag me away before I was done for GBH.

I phoned up about another cob today. I always start every conversation by saying "We really need a family horse,". Owner said, "Oh, he's perfect for you, my daughter can even ride him," "How old is your daughter?" I ask, "25". Oh right, he'll be perfect for an eight and a five year old then so!

I've got a rubbish budget and everything I ring up about has either gone before I ring or has a fault that means its not really suitable around kids. At least I find most people to be quite honest. One woman said her horse was perfect to ride but very strong in hand and told me she wouldn't waste my time on a viewing as she really wouldn't trust him around a little one. YO's daughter, who buys and sells the odd horse is coming with me if we spot anything that could be a runner. And if we like it, its getting on the trailer that day!

I know I shouldn't be upset and I shouldn't have made my OH cower before my volcanic temper yesterday, but you know when you get a really strong feeling? I had that about this little guy and he's the only one I have felt so positive about. Poor, poor little me! :) I'm tempted to ring up my old YO in Ireland and go horse hunting with her for a week. But we'll probably get rat arsed and god knows what I'll lead off the ferry!

I hate horse hunting too - went to see one yesterday, had convinced ourselves this might be the one, but bucked half a dozen times, reared, dropped a shoulder and threw another buck and my daughter was history - never done it before..................

Good luck, I know I am finding it very de-moralizing!

That's what OH's are for- it's in the job description :D

At least the rat arsed option is more fun! Your children can always be relegated to poo picking/ mucking out duties whilst you're having fun on your totally unsuitable ISH? :D (Can you tell I'm not a mum?)

Seriously though, hang in there! Perfect horse will appear soon!

put it this way least you didnt travel 3 and a half hours each way !!! i did and when i got there , only to be told he was sold in the morning ,no phone call nothing

I can really symphathise! I went to see a 4 yr old TB gelding in Feb. Had race, wintered out and was just coming back into work. Moved well on lunge and was the nicest boy. Owner seemed lovely, keen to stay in touch and the fact that we lived locally and said she could visit was a big attraction. We agreed sale that day, very exciting! and planning vetting that wk. Later that night got a text from her saying she had sold him to a friend who was taking him the next day! I was very upset and furious! It made me really question my judgement of people. I thought this lady was lovely and wanted me to have him for the best reasons. Wake up call definitely! You will find one, just be patient and FUSSY!

I think that's what had me so upset, this lady seemed really keen on us as a family, she thought we would be perfect for him in terms of the riding we did, how we would keep him, our plans for him to take daughter number one to PC, all that stuff. I thought she sounded lovely too and she kept saying he was such a sweetie he deserved a good home. It took me a couple of days to arrange a time that suited her, my more experienced friend who is helping me look and the kids. I called her to say I was sorting everyone out and she said not to worry, she knew how important it was to get the horse right when it is around small children and she agreed that it was vital the children met him at the viewing. And then she sells him to someone less than 24 hours before we are due to view him to someone who is clearly a dealer!

oh shame for you. Only thing I would say is that a lot of people are struggling to selll atm so maybe are a little quicker to grab an offer. I have learnt that if someone is trying to defer me for a viewing - what ever the reason, it has always meant that someone was ahead and they wanted to keep me on a back up list! Horse hunting is like clothes shopping - you always find somthing fantastic when you have no money or need!

That is disgusting - at least I got a phone call.

you can amagine me with red eyeballs and smoke coming out of ears ,and my otherhalf was looking the same too !!! and using a range rover to go there and back was not cheap in petrol
