Sorry, pointless post.
Thanks to a lift from a friend, on Tues night I took Cash on an 'outing' for the first time since I got him (other than a small XC schooling trip but that doesn't really count as we hacked there
), to an evening SJ clinic. Have been there lots with my 2 previous horses, and the instructor there made no secret of the fact that she didn't like either of them (admittedly one was a sod with a dirty stop, and the other one had a small attitude problem
) so was slightly hoping she might be a fan of Cash
He loaded into friend's lorry straight away, despite there being an over-excited 5yo TB and another horse who he'd never seen before already on board. Arrived excited but manageable (him not me
) to find that there were 4 other horses in our group, including a stallion, and we were all in the indoor school
He was a little overwhelmed by the echoey, dusty indoor, and a little, er, wayward
on the flat, but jumped the warm ups like an absolute star
Then instructor said we'd move onto a grid of 6 jumps, nearly all bounces- me a bit 'ermmm..' as i told her that other than when I tried Cash before buying, I haven't done so much as a double on him- only room in our school for single fences
So she put them down to poles first and let me have trot down the grid so he could have a look- he was a little spooky but fine second time round. Built up grid gradually until we were jumping a fairly decent height at the end of it- and Cash was just fantastic! Apart from a few stops at beginning of grid (numpty here forgot what her legs are for
) he popped over everything, making it look easy, and only had 2 poles down in the whole session- less than everyone else, who all come every week
Had lots of nice comments, particularly from the instructor who liked him (hallelujah
)
So verrrrry pleased. Was telling my mum how it went afterwards, mentioned we spent whole session on grids and poles, and was VERY surprised when she told me that the woman we bought him from (who reschooled him as a 4yo out of racing) had mentioned that she'd never done any pole work or grids with him as she never really went to clinics and didn't have enough jumps at home
Mum said she thought she'd told me too, then remembered that she said it while I was on top of Cash
So angelic pony dealt with a 6 jump grid having never done a grid before, and went down a long line of stripy poles (which was meant to be making things easier!) with hardly a peep, having barely done those before either!
I feel bad now, as I have played around with poles a bit over last few weeks, and assumed he was just being idiotic when he leapt over them in a very green way
No photos as no photographer, but one of him back home, chilling and congratulating himself in the field
Sorry, long, waffly and pointless. Just really thrilled with him for such a fab first party
