Captain hates vets, it is something of an issue with him to the extent that when Chris, our vet, who is a lovely guy, comes into the barn he gets very agitated . But he has gone lame, first time in 3 yrs of ownership we've had to have the vet for anything but routine, like sedation and vacs. We thought it might be a bruised hoof due to his banging. We waited to see if it would go but no, so the vet was called. Unfortunately I have the flu at present so Elizabeth had to deal with it, not something anyone wants when Captain and a vet have to be in the same stable .
Last time, when the locum lady vet came, he was sedated for his teeth he had to be twitched and have his bridle on just to allow the vet in and give him his sedation. Time before he spent all his time trying to kick Chris, our vet, whilst studiously avoiding E. (I was at work but was told it was comical to watch him try to kick the vet and at the same time try to miss her)
So Elizabeth goes off and waits for the vet. Luckily Chris is on holiday, so another member of the practise came. Elizabeth explained that he was difficult, she had already heard apparently! Which is not surprising since Chris will do anything to avoid coming out to him
The vet went into the stable, bated breath from E. Nothing, he just held his hoof up for her before she even asked. And he was as good as gold. He has an abscess and is poulticed. No problems.
Bl**dy horse is so unpredictable! I am actually very proud because he has a real phobia about vets and was an absolute sweetheart.
Hopefully this will help towards his phobia, he was not hurt so he may not be so difficult next vacs. Won't hold my breath though.
So do you know any ways to desensitise him to vets?
