Yesterday my parents found Belle (as the horses live at their house) with a nail sticking out of her frog.
It went in about an inch and a half through the side and she was apparently in a right state, but she put her head on my mum's shoulder and let my stepdad pull it out. It had a bend in it so everytime she tried to put her foot down, it was putting pressure on the bit sticking out and they had to get it out.
Anyway, spoke to vets and got bute and antibiotics, attempted to soak (that lasted about 30 seconds before she went mad!) and poulticed. I am hugely relieved that today she is fully weight-bearing on the injured hoof and looks so much better. Will continue with course of antibiotics and a new poultice (and more bute of course). I read on here about a lady who sadly lost her horse for the same reason when the nail damaged the bone and apparently our vet's friend also lost a horse to the same thing.
No idea where the nail came from - it's old and rusty, definitely not from a horse shoe or any of our fencing. Please watch out for nails near where your horses are!
*breathes a sigh of relief*
