So sick of it!!!!

that is his favourite toy! so much so that he takes it to bed (I might point out my bed!!!!!) with us every night! it is terrifying watching him suck on his teddy when he is sleepy! really makes me wonder what I was doing allowing a big dangerous dog to be in my home!

My dog often encounters two Mastiff crosses, huge dogs and absolutely delightful. However, I mentioned them in passing to another dog walker and apparently everyone avoids them as they are 'vicious' - they are not at all, but it appears that because they are Mastiff crosses and brindle they are 'vicious' - and these are dog owners saying this! Shame.

I get the same on a regular basis OP. Tia looks like a big staffy (Am Bull x Rotti) and she doesn't have good recall so only gets let off when there is no one around etc. She can jump and bounce if a dog tries to play with her but she is a baby and I'm working on it, I also call her close to me when I run and we pass someone because I feel it's polite. She cowered away from a patterdale puppy recently!

I cannot begin to tell you how many times I've been told my pitbull should be muzzled/I shouldn't own such a dangerous dog etc etc. I also still feel I need to justify why she is on a lead when owners of out of control labs/spaniels etc are desperatly trying to retrieve their dog from anywhere near me.

Yet when I had Quila who needed space and was always under control I had the same people ignore my requests to retrieve their dog before I tried to kill it!

Lexiedhb we are basically agreeing then and I think the focus should be on the irresponsible owners and breeders :-) instead of ridiculing people who may be frightened of the dogs. BTW the SBT have just gone up to 60 on the SSPCA site and if you check out the x breeds a lot of them are bull x and bear in mind any with Pitbull in them will be PTS. It is a very sad state of affairs.

Sorry OP digressing here :-)

I was walking my boy in our usual place last week and we have had comments of "thats one of THOSE dogs" with a snide look and one person telling me to put a muzzle on him because all dogs like him should be muzzled (his dog was off leash and growled as it passed us mine was walking nicely at my side on leash) He is an Alaskan Malamute. People cant see past the newspaper headlines :(

The ridicule comes from when folk can not see past the most recent daily fail headline, and tar all dogs of a certain breed with the same brush (as shutterbug has seen with the snow dogs now as that was LAST weeks headline). It shows massive ignorance if you can not tell the difference between a bull breed/ any dog on lead sat by its owner minding its own business and one legging it full pelt at you, teeth out, hackles raised being called "killer" by some teenager thug swigging stella at 9am.

Did you look at my link of the lovely 76 year old pensioner and her lovable 5 staffy x's, (four of which are offspring), being done under dangerous dogs? Those dogs look really nice and they have been put in the situation they are in by their owner but it annoys me seeing people blaming the bloke saying he must have been frightened of the bull x's because of their image and reacted in the wrong way. More likely he just saw an old lady with five strong dogs who she would not have a hope of controlling whether they just had youthful exuberance or aggression. In my eyes people excusing the lady are just giving ammunition to the people in Scotland calling for all dogs to be muzzled in public and making them distrust dog owners even more. Same as the attack on the 8 year old girl by 2 American bull x's when playing tag with the owner's daughter. To see comments made that she somehow was to blame by triggering the dogs makes me sick to put it bluntly. If we dog owners want better images of our dogs I think it needs made it crystal clear that we don't think it is acceptable. If I lived in that area having seen the photos of that girl I would be wary of those types of dogs as well. It is natural human reaction. I have come across a lot of people who are frightened of dogs nowadays and it makes me very sad. Too often dog owners like the old lady in that article say my dog wouldn't hurt a fly, it just playing etc but if people don't want the dog near them, their wishes should be respected. I am going to shut about it now :-) and just hope we don't all end up having to muzzle our dogs up here.

Very very very few dogs just "attack" for no reason. I imagine to the trained eye (not mine) all of the recent attacks could have been predicted/prevented by removing the dog from the situation/heeding a warning signal/supervising the dog better etc etc. Dogs are animals- not robots they react to situations, situations which could have been engineered by those who ended up getting bitten, or the parents of who failed to realise. Its not meant to be vomit inducing- but it is the truth- this does not make any dog bite OK.

Again no one is saying it is a bad thing to be frightened but it is still ignorance to tar all of a breed with the same brush- sure cross the road, sure move out of the way- tell the owner of said placid bull breed doing absolutely nothing wrong that it is a devil dog and should be muzzled - NOT acceptable IMO

Going back to the original post as a runner I would have thanked you for calling your dog back whilst I run past, I'm not frightened of dogs and do assume that if people have them off lead they are socialable, however when I'm running a dog running in front of me breaks my stride (regardless of the size) and focus, I always recall my own dog round bikes, runners and horses so that accidents don't happen (wish people would be as considerate with their children).
I do tend to stick my one back on lead or grab his collar when there are other dogs but that's because he's huge and a bit over-eager which can be a bit intimidating to other dogs (bloody ridgebacks think it's acceptable to stalk and charge, whilst it's acceptable to other ridgebacks most other dogs not quite as keen), I do say to the owners that he's friendly just a bit big, once the other dog is close enough I let him go.
I wouldn't let him run up to children (it would be like 10 pin bowling with children flying everywhere), however he is a child magnet and the majority of children/parents approach the right way and ask first if they can pet him, but I'm always amazed at the number that don't and just come up and pet him. I always think there's a calculated risk to this, I (as an adult) might be willing to take the risk and pet a yorkshire terrier, yes it can still bit me but doesn't have the size or jaw strength to do huge damage (hurt yes, maim unlikely), however a large powerful breed you should always ask (like my 52kg ridgeback), they're not anymore likely to bite you but if they do the damage they can cause if much more significant.
I also believe that a lot of other breed dog bites go unreported because of the types, a gun dog type has been specically bred to have a 'soft' mouth it will bite and release, a terrier type has been specifically bred to be tenacious and hold on, hence the more damage and sensationalist stories (all terriers not just staffies). I'll admit when I initially read the headline concerning the malamute last week killing the baby my first thought was that it had lain down next to the baby and smothered it, it didn't cross my mind that it would have actually attacked the baby.
I do agree something needs to be done about irresponsible owners (and breeders) of all types of dogs not just breed specific anddon't think muzzling ALL dogs is the way to go about it, they do need to stop puppy farms as these people are not breeding for temperament, general public need to be better informed when getting a puppy (5 gen health testing, meeting the mum, what have the parents acheived), better support for rescue dogs (they sometimes have more problems than puppies), stricter controls around micro-chipping (and maing sure that the companies keep records up to date, one company has an 8 week backlog which isn't helpful if you lose your dog), stricter controls around breeding and breeders taking more responsibility (good breeders already do, but there are far too many out there that don't), KC good citizen awards possibly should be mandatory to Bronze level so that there is at least basic training there, most of us on here either already have training in place, working on it or are aware of the dogs limitations but too many irresponsible owners out there giving the good owners a bad name.

But its not because it was a bull breed - a malamute or Husky killed a baby last week........... in both cases the dogs had stupid owners!!

And there is someone who obviously believes what they read in the papers if the dog killed the baby why is it still alive? Most of what is in the papers about it is bullshit I know someone connected to the family so know the facts not the story selling ones they put in a newspaper

Really???? I was under the impression news papers could be done for printing out right lies. Theres nothing to gain surely by saying the baby died if it was just attacked. I was talking abouy the one in wales incase there are crossed wires, pronounced dead at cardiff hospital, why say thatbif they saved the baby?

They didn't save the baby but the dog did not attack it nevermind bite it's head off as the papers state.
There are many incorrect facts in the papers and it's one of the reasons the sun was made to retract it's issue and issue a public apology via the press complaints group.
And I meant the dog is still alive if it had done what the papers state it would have been PTS straight away nevermind left to wander the streets along with the families other dog

That opens a whole new can of worms. Wondering how the parents are not in custody if the dog (s) had nowt to do with it and are home wandering the streets.

I never believed the head had been bitten off , if that was the case why air lift it?
did the sun say something all the other papers didnt then? As similar stories are still all over the net?

Its a very bizaare story about the Malamute and the baby, it just dosnt add up, the dog was wandering around whilst the ambulance and police were there and it was a neighbour who caught the dog. The neighbour didnt mention anything about the dog being covered in blood and as Cyrus says the dog has not been pts which ia what they do almost immediately.

Does anyone know when the autopsy result and inquest are being held?

The sun were the ones who's front page headline was "the dog has bit my babies head off" the rest followed like sheep.
The baby was intensive care for first three days of its life autopsy is being done to find cause of death because there was no marks from a dog on it.

It was supposed to be the beginning of this week but apparently they could take some time
