Today I took Flodden to his first puppy training session, I went in 15 mins early as requested, with his certificate of vaccination. I had checked it was ok for him to go at just over 10 weeks old. The lady I spoke to on the phone (A)- who is the contact for the kennel club said yes bring him along and just do little bits.
When I got in the woman doing the paperwork (B) just ignored me for about 5 mins while I stood there like a lemon. Then person A came over and introduced herself and was stroking Flodden and chatting pleasantly to me. I then spoke to woman writing (B) and told her i needed to register and I had Floddens vac certificate. She asked in a very sour way how old he was so i told her 10 weeks 3 days. Her response 'we don;t take them that young' in a sour lecturing voice. I respionded that I had asked and was told he could come at 10 weeks if he had had his vaccination, i said if I had been told it was 4 months then I would not have brought him down.
Person a said it was fine of course he could come, and just do a little each week which is what i wanted, he is too young to do an hour but it is good experience to go. Then miserable paperwork woman (B) started to have a go at me saying 10 weeks was far far far too young for a dog to learn, and I was wrong to take him, which I told her was rubbish, he had a good recall from over 100m, he was house trained and asked to go out for a poo and knew what no meant. In my opinion and experience it was never too early to instill good behaviour in a pup. And 4 months is possibly rather late to start as many behaviours are already ingrained. She had another go at me in a really peevish manner, so I tore up my registration form in front of her and told her that no way was I going to have her trying to teach my pup how to behave in public when she clearly had no idea herself how to behave and I would take my puppy somewhere where responsible dog ownership was promoted and training was fun and that I would be putting in an official complaint to the kennel club. Sour faced cow. No way am i making Flodden go there.

This is my first experience of the kennel club training, and to be honest I am rather shocked by her attitude, I want training where my pup and i are welcomed and it is a pleasant experience for us both, I know it is little and often for a young pup, but he is bright and loves learning. i took him to a friends and i taught him to sit in about 5 mins, and that was with her two labs and my other lurcher there. he had fun, they all did and he learned :) Am definitely looking for another dog training club!

Mardy old cow! We took Izzy to the KC Good Citizenship classes at 12wks and my current trainer prefers owners to start training at home at 7-10 wks as they generally start to soak up all that your teaching. He also believes that as soon as the vacs are done (and the puppy is aloud out) the puppy should be out socialising :D

flodden has been well and truly socialised, he has been to a friends and had to muck in with 6 other dogs, labs and retrievers and he is fantastic, very respectful of the older ones and plays nicely with the young ones. I thought that taking him to training at 10 weeks would be approved of by the Kennel Club and I had checked, but even iif they have got this 4 months old rule , it costs nothing to be polite and welcoming to someone new. Will be ringing my vet tomorrow and telling them not to recommend the club and explain why.

We take puppies as soon as they are fully vaxxed, 16 weeks is leaving it a bit long IMO, puppy classes are as much about socialisation as formal training.

Thanks Spudlet, thats what I thought, and what I did with my last puppy. She was a horrible woman, really sour, I am going to find out if my last trainer has any classes we could join.

I would try and find puppy socialisation classes rather then full on training classes as he is more likely to be successful at these and among fellow pups?
I agree 10weeks is a bit young if it was something like a formal obedience class etc? If just puppy class then thats 100%.
However you shouldn't be told one thing on the phone and something else when you get there.

Good for you for not continuing, there is no need for rudeness, where do they get these people.

You can do your KC Good Citizen Dog Scheme Bronze as there is no age limit and you dont need to have done a puppy foundation course either.

Imglad you are going to report her to your vet because it makes you wonder how people she has scared off in the past. I think you have had a lucky escape and I cant believe she didnt fall in love with your little Flodden.

I am doing the Bronze atm with Darcy and there is 2 little puppies in the class who are brilliant and I agree the earlier the better to train them. Sounds like you have done a fair bit of training already so you would have a head start.

Do you take him to puppy parties? My vet has just started advertising these, but my puppies are all grown up now :o Does anyone know what you do there? ^_^

No it was a puppy class, socialisation and very basic training leading up to the citiszenship awards, I have no intention of pushing him too far or fast, I have trained 4 dogs from puppy hood, so know what I am doing, but want to do his training with other puppies around.

I have been to puppy parties in the past with another pup and never again. It was total and utter chaos and 2 of the puppies had to be removed as were seriously aggressive with others biting in earnest, not in play. And attacking the nurse. I prefer to take my pup out with other mature dogs, so they learn respect and correct behaviour. Flodden was dropped in the deep end at 8 weeks old, I had had him 1 day with just my own lurcher, day 2 he met my friends 2 lab bitches, and day 3 he went with us to a friends house for dinner and there were 7 dogs there, he behaved impeccably, respectful of the older ladies and played with the youngsters. He has a wide circle of canine friends of all ages and is great with all of them. and the best thing ever is he has recall whilst playing with them all. He is confident and well socialised.

I started Evie at 12 weeks and that was on the puppy foundation course. Not sure if they accepted them any earlier at that particular class, but Evie only had her 2nd vacc at 10 weeks, then allowing for the time for vacc to take effect took it to 12 weeks. Not excusing the womans behaviour at all but I wonder if she thought he maybe wasn't fully vaccinated as he was 10 weeks, although instead of being rude a look at the certificate would have told her that wouldn't it.
Actually thinking back to the class I went to, the woman who checked paper work was an older lady not the trainer, possibly this was the case with the club you went too, in which case hopefully she will have been put in her place by the trainer.

Bit surprised that despite assuring us you are a responsible dog owner your unvaccinated, new pup was mixing with other dogs aged 8weeks.
As it was a puppy class I don't see their problem I have to say.

My new pup was mixing with only vaccinated dogs including my other dog, all known ones that are around my house on a regular basis. And my vet is happy that this was the case. He was not allowed on the ground in fields, only in my garden. He was vaccinated at 8 weeks 2 days , and had his second vaccination at 10 weeks 2 days, all as agreed with my vet. SusieT are you related to woman B as your tone is rather peevish too!

The Kennel Club is a private member-only monopoly supplying expensive registrations by mail order.

What on earth made you think it has anything to do with dogs?

PMSL Dry Rot :D

Agree it's more socialisation than training at this age, establishing manners, the basics, sometimes people (not you) do way too much with their pups and they are 'deadened' at a very young age, maybe that is what the woman was worried about, not knowing you, but did not articulate herself very well.
It's swings and roundabouts, dependent on the dog, but she obviously needs a better manner in dealing with the public!

Mine started at 11 weeks, they said as long as she had injections then fine, she actually started 1 day before her second vac else she would of missed th 4 weekly intake but as she would be indoors with only vaccinated dogs, vet and training said fine. Shes now 18 months and is taking her bronze test tonight, its taking us a while bcaus she is a high energy bouncy staffy who can walk to heel nicly but would rather not bother so plase everone, fingers crossed for us tonight

Got it in a nutshell Dry Rot. :D

Good luck with your bronze zarablue, I was ridiculously nervous when Evie was doing hers, was convinced I would fail on the questions bit.:p

Good Luck Zara for tonight, Darcy is taking hers in July and whilst she is very bright is liable to kick off at other dogs. We are having a run through tonight so should be interesting.

Make sure you let us know how you get on.

Nanook started at 11 weeks once he'd had both his vacc's. We went to the puppy foundation course. We're now doing the bronze- in fact we have training tonight.

So how long after his 2nd vax was it before you took him there? Maybe the grumpy one was worried about the immunity actually having kicked in? I might take a puppy that age to watch and absorb the activity ,but certainly would not expect anything traing wise..maybe that lady thought the same? But we vax our puppies at 8 and 12 weeks, being old fashioned we believe the later the second one is the better,so there are no complications with the dam`s immunity over riding the vaccine.Obviously our puppies get a parvo shot at 6 weeks here ,for their own protection .
Just musing that may have been the problem:)

Hi Ek, it may well have been her problem, but I will never know as she never actually told me anything, just bitched and moaned :( My vet was happy for him to go, he would only have done a little training, just fun stuff and socialised and as all dogs there have to be vaccinated there was no risk to my boy. Just an odd woman, having a bitch of a day and unable to keep her bad temper to herself.

Ah Bosworth..poor soul may have a right Victor Meldrew sculking at home, bet her problem that day was never even about your puppy!:)
