John Merrick lookalikey....

Decided to ease the Precious One into non-muzzle grazing with the winter coming in but after 4 hours muzzle free came in looking like the elephant man. Ok a bit of an exaggeration but glands up and some strange looking formations on her forehead. Can only describe them as a slight triangle of swelling a bit like /\ from edge of each eyebrow rather than solid mass. Did go down after an hour or so after being in but has left me slightly concerned. Still her perky self and tucked into net albeit for only 15 mins and then decided to snooze until reduced tea of chaff and handful of mix :-$

Anyone else have the same repercussions after de-muzzling. We do have good grazing and after competing this morning thought I would give her a few hours off from her muzzle to ease her into what I thought would be less goodness in the green stuff.

Sounds really odd. Our muzzled pony has never come up with anything like that. Are you sure yours didn't eat something it shouldn't have? You said you had been competing it that morning - not stress related bumps? Or a sting from something? Hope it goes down.

she has probably been stuffing 'stuff' that she couldn't get with the muzzle on. One of mine is allergic to something in the summer field. and the first time he goes out there his glands come right up, but after a few days he is back to normal.

Thanks for your replies.

Rose Folly - no stings and not stress related but could have been something she ate in field although has been in that particular grazing all summer.

Bosworth - I think its because she has stuffed herself, although she didnt look bloated when she came in.

All seems well today and will try without the muzzle again but she will be in at lunchtime just in case !

liesel, nothing to do with the amount she has eaten, just what she has eaten. This is not related to quantity, it is a reaction in the glands, just an allergy. and it may well be that with the muzzel on she couldn;t actually graze on that particular plant before so her body is just getting used to it. Keep and eye on her, but if she is happy, no adverse reactions to anything else she should be ok. Mine normally takes a few days for it to stop happening

Sorry to muscle in on this thread but what sort of muzzles are you using ? Im considering one for my warmblood becos he bloats up and gets colic but greenguard are v expensive if he wont wear it and I have to ditch it?

I've still got my mare in her muzzle as our grass still looks too good. I think I'll leave it on for another month at least - I'm so paranoid as she's had laminitis.

My mare wears the greenguard muzzle with the greenguard headcollar, it did rub her at first but now her skin has hardened she's fine. I used to have a shire's but she didn't take to that at all.

Thanks again Bosworth. Sent her out again today for 4 hours and all is looking ok. Still a tad puffy but her usual self so not too concerned. Like you say I think its because she has eaten some grass she wouldnt normally do with muzzle on. Daughter hacked her today and she was her usual opinionated self :-)

Alma she has a Greenguard and coped well on it. They are expensive but worth it in the long run I think. Friend has one exactly the same but from Robinsons which was around £45 I think so cheaper but not what you would call a bargain. I did try the Shires bucket type but found that gave her a rather large friction burn on her chin and it did seem limit her too much so after a day gave up on that one. She isnt prone to laminitis just very greedy.
