I've got the day off from work and went up to the yard to spend some time with my horse. He's been unlevel so I thought I'd have a look at him on the lunge before I decided what to do with him. I couldn't believe - he was sound! Must know I've got him booked into the vets next week!
He was lunging quite happily, although a bit full of himself when another livery come down the track. She had her dog off the lead and next thing he was in the school chasing my horse, who took off really quickly and bucking like a demon. I shouted to her to control her dog and got a mouthful about how dare I speak to her like that. Got horse back under control and apologised for my tone (actually thought it was quite restrained in the circumstances, but anything for an easy life) but pointed out her dog could've caused an accident. I was expecting some sort of apology but obviously none was coming so I pointed she should keep her dog under control. She just said how was she meant to know there was a horse in the school and that she'd expect me to be at work as if that made it ok.
I took my horse for a quiet hack as he was sound but spent the first half in floods of tears as I don't really like confrontation and it had been quite unpleasant. Things don't usually get to me like that, but I think it was just too much on top of all the worry I'm having with my horse at the moment. He was a complete star, bless him, and we had a lovely hack in the sunshine which has at least cheered up my day.
Our yard owner just rents us the land as leaves us too it, so there is no-one I can complain to. It seems she won't listen until her dog gets injured or killed and she's just the sort of person to try and sue.

Sorry to winge, but I'm just so upset by the whole thing. I so envy those of you who have your own places today!

That sounds awful! How horrible of her to be like that when it was her own fault she couldn't control her dog! If it had been me and my dog, I would have been mortified!

At least you had a nice hack

Don't pay any attention to her - some people are sooo annoying!

I would have been furious! I have the same thing happen at my yard all the time!

A livery who insists on bringing her dogs up, who just roam everywhere, have to check there isnt one in my stables before I bring my horses in!

when I first bought Beau, the first time I ever rode him, took him in the school, she takes a short cut through the school with her dogs off lead, one who was a pup, pup comes running over to Beau and starts going between his legs etc, thank god Beau is good as gold, but I didnt know that at the time, bloody stupidity! 5yr old horse who has had a yr off, great!

You should have chased her and doggy with lunge whip!

Oh dear, I know that if that had happened to me the air would have been very blue, in fact it DID happen once but the woman who had 7, YES 7!!! dogs did apologise, silly mare

Her dog only narrowly missed having a horseshoe shape in it's head too.

I hope she apologises to you later, if not I would point out exactly what you posted on here, to her.

I like St_B's suggestion of chasing them with the lunge whip.
There is no excuse for her not being able to control her dog, end of!
I am sorry to hear that it upset you but you had every right to speak to tell her off, what sort of tone of voice did she expect?
Maybe you could have a quiet word with her later asking her to keep the dog on a lead if she is unable to call it back to her.
Glad to hear your horse is sound.

my horse has a bone chip so is on v restricted t/o, allowed out of walk or to turn quickly etc!) which every1 at the yard knows,i put him in the school last night to have a stretch and roll as he'd been in all day like i always do. family came up with their puppy who ran away from them straight into the school barking at and chasing my horse casuing him to spook and run around a lot.
they were lucky i didnt see them (another livery did and told me) so they will get a severe telling off tonight and will have to wait 2 weeks til the next x rays to see if thats done any damage

Was Amazed to see a similar post about dogs in school
Was going to post a rant.
We have been having trouble in the last few weeks with a neighbours terrier wandering round the yard. It came into the school on the weekend and chased a childs pony being worked.
They were warned at the time but dog still keeps coming round. Last night turned my sports horse gelding out in school ...terrier appeared from now-where and chased him round. Went straight round to owners and insisted they come straight away and get it ...they ummmed and arrred but eventually the wife came back with me to find terrier frantically trying to bite neddies heals...when ... bosh !! neddie flicked the terrier with his hoof and the terrier somersalted over and started running round in a tight circle inable to use front leg... The woman just ran off screaming ..screaming ..."her poor boy" ... leaving me to go in and retrieve it. Carried it to her house and put it down on the kitchen floor where he just got up and walked soundly off....trying to calm her down as she was still screaming said "look hes ok ...he walking " for her to reply back he is NOT OK !! and get abusive. So I just walked off.
All I can say is I hope both have learned their lesson as have warned her that if he tried to chase the stallion he would probably kill it ! .... what can you do ??

Thanks guys - there is absolutely no talking to this woman, although chasing her with a lunge whip might be a better than conversation anyway. The only consolation is that I know its not just me who finds her difficult!

Absolutely, my other horse probably would have killed it.

What amazes me is that HORSEY dog owners seem so clueless, they should know more than anyone what can happen if a dog starts yapping at a horses feet!

I have 2 dogs and they are never up the yard when it is busy, and are never off lead or out when other liveries or horses are around. Its common sense!

I get so annoyed because I will be bringing my horses out of the stable and have to stop 3 or 4 times just to wait for one of her dogs to get out of my way!

Even worse when you have to wait with horse in hand outside your own stable (indoor stables, narrow alley between them), while whichever dog is in there decides it would like to come out.

Another consolation - its not just me who's having trouble with dogs in the school. Why do people think its ok to let their dogs behave like this, and why are they then surprised when they get kicked!

You've hit the nail on the head! We regularly have two or three owners/riders who come up with 2, 3 or 4 dogs and let them run riot. Sometimes there can be 6 dogs on the yard at once and they run up and down the fence line when you are trying to have a lesson or worse still come in and **** in the arena whilst you are being taught. Makes me bl00dy furious! I almost left my yard because of it. They always let the dogs pooh anywhere, usually outside my stable

Only minor consolation is that it useful for teaching your horse not to get distracted by them!

Any yard owner who allows dogs on their yard is asking for problems as they have a legal duty of care for anyone on their yard. They need to have a written policy that no dogs are allowed on the yard and be seen to enforce it otherwise if a claim arises they will be held responsible.

Oh dont get me started! Its strange how there can be dog mess all over the yard but it is never their dog that has done it, even though only their dogs come up the yard and Ive watched them sh*tting everywhere!

In defence of dog owners.....

My dog is well behaved and comes back to me when called. He is very good around horses and would never chase/yap/play etc . I take him riding with me and he will stay by my horse if we meet any other riders - occassionally my big horse (very long way from his brains to his feet....) will spook at our own dog (because he is daft!), but we are all pretty well behaved. Likewise when we go shooting - get it wrong or any disobediance and his/my life is in danger.

If my my dog was not well behaved, I wouldn't take him with me..... easy, really.

Sorry that you have a rotten morning - no idea if chatting with lady with dog and explaining why you went off on one might help - am sure that she was not intentionally disruptive?

Good luck and hope that horse stays sound!

Catherine, please don't think I've got anything against dogs - I just think they need to be under control around horses, not least because they could get injured. Most people at our yard have dogs and unfortunately they are not all as well behaved as yours!
There is no point in talking to this woman, she will never accept that her dog running round the yard could be a problem - it would still be my fault for being in the school at the wrong time!

we have liveries that bring there dogs up occasionally, one is always on the lead ,the other charges about like a mad thing. YO doesnt seem to mind the dogs being there but i have told the owners that 2 of my horses do not like dogs, (otto will put his head down and actually charge at them! ) so as far as im concerned they have been warned. whats really gets me is when they crap everywhere and its just left.

My dog has been broung up amongst horses, whe knows not to go into the school, even I am in there and will usually sit by the gate or peering through the fence. Having said that I've seen 'livery' dogs running around, barking, nearly getting kicked and generally causing mayhem. I really think it is a dog owners responsibility to either train properly or leave the poor dog at home!

Maybe you should move yards, then you wouldn't have to deal with so many issues...riders without Hi-Viz, out of control dogs, etc.
You could enjoy your horse in peace then, without worrying about others....

Oh dear how horrid for you. I absolutely hate any sort of confrontation, and I would have been in tears as well, so you have all my sympathy.

On a slightly lighter note, I think the dog owners at my yard would be more likely to be annoyed at me and my horse than the other way round. When he's turned out in the sand-school, his favourite game is 'racing' and he always trying to persuade any nearby dogs to race him up and down the fence.

He sometimes manages to get them to do this for a bit, but they tend to get tired or bored of the racing game long before he does - so it's more a case of horse harassing dog than dog harassing horse LOL!

But then who would keep everyone on the straight and narrow - someone has to be right all the time and it might as well be me

Life is now back in perspective!

What a disgrace - people shouldn't be allowed to take their dog anywhere near a horse unless they can control it. She sounds like an ignorant individual. At least you had a lovely hack, I would try to focus on that and forget the half-wit you had the misfortune to deal with earlier :-)
