After a long gap of 25 years I've rediscovered my love of riding. For over a year now I've intermittently been riding a friend's cobs and been enjoying it but not been able to go out very often so, 5 months ago, I posted an ad in Facebook saying I was looking for a horse to part loan.

For the past 4 months I have been the proud part loaner now of a lovely 15.2 Welsh Section D, 17 years old, who is an absolutely superstar! I am having lessons from his owner who is also a qualified instructor and little by little she is helping me to change the way I ride .... I was taught to grip with my upper leg, hands down and am now learning to relax upper leg, wrap lower leg around the body and hands up!! Goodness it's hard work but I'm loving every single second of it.

I was adamant when I started that no, I don't compete or jump but only want to hack. Since then I've started jumping (trotting poles and slowly worked up) - it makes such a difference riding a horse who wants to jump and you feel so safe on! The biggest I've done is 90cm but I feel that was a bit too big .... I'm happy around 70cm. Before the thought of a trotting pole would bring me out in a cold sweat so this is real progress and it's so lovely to be able to pop over logs when out hacking!

What prompted me to write this post is that I have just signed up for Club membership to British Dressage .... I never in a million years dreamed I would be doing this!! Turns out I'm not such a bad rider after all - after my lessons my riding has improved so much that I'm doing my first proper dressage competition on Sunday and in a few weeks time am going to Summerhouse to the Dressage Festival .... and not just to watch!! I honestly don't expect anything from this but am so looking forward to it! I'm just enjoying every little milestone I reach and having such a great time and now I've over 50 am loving learning new stuff. You never know what is around the next corner do you!

Hope no-one minds me posting this but I just wanted to share with others who would understand :)

Thank you - I'll keep you posted. Having a lesson today to run through the test again and see how much I can remember lol!

Thanks very much! I think I've found a way to overcome the nerves which is to just tell myself I'm practising, even when I'm doing the real thing and at the end of the day what's the worst that could happen? Mind you, I DON'T want to find out what is the worst that could happen lol.

I did my first show last Sunday and didn't get placed but had an awesome time riding him and even had double reins on him! Unfortunately the judge overlooked that the 4 above me didn't get the horses to strike off on the right lead when cantering (I did) and the horses weren't in an outline (mine was) so not sure quite what the judge was looking at - my horse's owner was fuming but I was pretty chilled about the whole thing and just put it down to experience. Judges eh!!

It sounds to me like you have the perfect attitude to all this. It's great that you're having such enjoyment from your share horse - long may it continue.

This was such a lovely post to read. Hope you continue to enjoy riding (and competing) for many years to come. Good luck with your forthcoming events xx

Well done you!

I am a proud first time horse owner to a 4yr old cob. I'm really hoping we can progress together and look forward to what the future holds.

Keep us posted OP

Well done - lovely positive post and hope everything goes fabulously for you at your next tests. Very inspiring for me, working to my first tests (I'm a bit sore in a previously injured leg so waiting for consultant app to tell me all ok) - it's just so important to just crack on if you want to do something and not worry too much about the ,earning experiences!

Thanks so much everyone! Had a bit of a spanner in the works as the horse's owner was admitted to hospital yesterday and may well be in until Saturday .... not the news we wanted to hear and she's gutted. She's still adamant that she will come with me (I'm happy to drive the lorry) but we'll see - she's helped me through so much I really want her to be there too regardless of the fact she calls the test fantastically!! Worst case I'll do it all on my own or I'll miss this one and do the one at a local centre in 2 weeks time instead. In the meantime I'll keep learning the test as if my husband calls it I'd be all over the shop and got enough to contend with as it is! Never straightforward is it .....

I hope you manage to get there most venues have spare people around that will call a test for you.

This. I often call for a friend and end up staying in the arena for about 20 minutes as people coming in ask if I'd do the same for them. The one time my booming voice is a benefit! I actually find it better to memorise my test as I'm always thinking "what's next and where?" which means I prepare the movements earlier. If I have someone calling I tend to switch off a bit and stop thinking for myself.

Wishing your friend a speedy recovery, but you really strike me as the sort of person who'll be fine on your own :)

Thanks everyone for your lovely posts. My friend is really quite ill actually and I have decided to hold fire until she's up and about again to come with me and support me. She's also been wittering on about me doing my first EVER one day event in October so may not just be dressage I've got on the cards! I'll keep you posted but would love to hear from other people who are just starting out doing stuff with their horses as I think we can all inspire each other! :) x
