that we love, live and breathe horses. but why? why do we love these animals so much? animals that cost a fortune and take up so much time.

for me it is their sheer beauty and the fact that they give so much and ask for so little. i wish humans were more like horses :-/

Because they are open, honest - no false promises.
I have a bolshy cob who is greedy, self centred and selfish - but now and again he droops - will fall asleep on my shoulders, looks after me when we ride, comes to me whenever i whistle him - I just adore him,

Because they are smiley and full of fun and there's nothing better than digging your nose into their long shaggy winter fluff and inhaling that wonderful pony pong!!

You can tell them a secret, and they will never tell a soul
You can share your problems and they will never judge you
You can give them a carrot or a hug and they will give you their heart

I like the "feel the fear but do it anyway" thing. Jumping-wise. Yes, you can do bigger, get on with it. Such a buzz.

As for my horse, he's a way of life, not a hobby. I adore him, spend all of my time, energy and money on him. I love him to bits and worry about him constantly. For which I get rewarded with bites. Ratbag.

For soo many reasons! But today it really hit home. I've taken on a huge feral foal, no handling at all apart from being pinned for worming etc, then chased up, then down, a trailer ramp to get to me. Hes been here a week and I was truly humbled today to catch him up via a halter and length of rope, and have him decide to come over to me and have scritches. The poor little chap is terrified, but still chose to give me a chance! He let me touch him all over his bum and head etc despite the fact he was shaking with fear. He then came over to me, sniffed my hand and snuffled all over my head and face! In his shoes I'd never EVER go near a person again, but ginaorma foal, depsite his rough start still genuinely wants to be my friend :D

I then turned my part bred arab out in the field and nearly burst with pride over her athleticism and general gorgeousness! All of us need to remember that we are blessed to have horses in our lives :)

That is lovely.

Heartily agree with all posters but remember that the world is divided into the horsey and the non-horsey and the later type will always regard the former as completely nuts!

They may well be correct for who in their right mind would give up half of their life and spend large proportions of their income looking after an animal that is dangerous at both ends and uncomfortable in the middle?

Just the same, it was my pleasure to look after an Anglo-Irish grey mare for seventeen years come rain or shine - sitting with her in her box while she ate, sang to her while grooming for which I apologise, fretted when she was poorly - sleeping in the feedroom and lazed on glorious summer days when swallows flew through her legs out in the paddock.

None of it was ever a chore - every trip to the yard I went like a kid let of school.
Such a shame that she had to go as we all do in the end.

My horses are part of my family. I love spending time with them, I find it very relaxing. I love spending time with my boys because they trust me and are really affectionate. :)

I watched way too much Black Beauty when a child. I was engrossed in the adventures and how Beauty always saved the day.I thought when Im older I want a Beauty and I do. I should say she found me and all the magic from when I was a child came back. Now my Beauty regularly saves the day for me. :D

I think this says it all for me.

Ode to the Horse

Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride, friendship without envy or beauty without vanity? Here, where grace is laced with muscle, and strength by gentleness confined.

He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity. There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent, there is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.

England’s past has been borne on his back. All our history is his industry; we are his heirs, he our inheritance.

This is a lovely thread :)

I just love the journey my pony and I have been on. Took a year to gain trust and confidence and now I think we know each other inside out. Being native he's so smart/sharp and I love the way his brain is wired. He can push the boundaries on occasion but I can usually work out quickly what the issue is and understand where he's coming from. It does amaze me how horses on the whole are willing to put up with us humanoids! I think beyond dogs, horses are the only species you can have that bond with. Though a friend at work is convincing me she's got some very brainy chickens! :D

I couldn't possibly put it better than this! I used to love it when they read this poem out at the end of the Horse of the Year Show - always made me cry...still does whenever I read it. Do they still read it out?

Agree with this. I love having that bond where nobody understands but you and you can fully rely on horses to be there for you no matter what without judging.
