Oh God!

So the lady who is selling the little palomino Cob that we wanted to see rang me to say he was standing on 3 legs in the stable yesterday morning so we did obviously not go and see him, she will call once he is ok again.

As both Jan and Bri had cleared their diaries for the day and were free rather than waste the day we did some internet surfing and ringing round and decided to go down and visit to a yard that specializes in selling cobs, under the name of its very well known stallion over here, the impression given when we phoned was that all of the horses for sale were progeny of this stallion that were either home bred or bought back from previous owners. He had 12 cobs available and would pull out a selection for us to try between 146 and 160 cms and only the good confidence giving ones. None of us knew the yard personally but the website looked great!!!!!!!!!! Let that be a lesson ladies Websites lie!

So after a two hour drive!

We arrived and walked into a dark stinking barn to see 6 cobs in little stables standing on about an inch of soaking shavings, all were filthy dirty, covered in **** stains with mud encrusted feathers, and dull coats. They were all bar one, needing some meat and muscles on them and a bloody good worming programme.

When we asked how long he had had them in we were told they had all been sent over fro from Wales! one poor little mare who will haunt me was the only one who was shiney, bright eyed and looking good, she had come over on the boat two days ago.

We checked her out (as frankly both Bri and I just wanted her out of there before she turned into a wreck like the others) but she was only 144 and just too lightweight for me, it was heartbreaking to have to reject her.

Off the six;

The little 9 year old mare who had arrived 2 days ago was the healthiest looking and would have been fine for a lighter rider, I am 11 stone so it was a no go.

11 Year old gelding, Jan checked him over and he was full of what we call Mok, or mudfever, to the extent his legs were full of fluid, he had also recently been ridden in a saddle that did not fit as he was actually swollen where the panels had been squeezing him

5 year old gelding who was skinny, full of worms and with his wolf teeth still poking out at right angles, he was apparently working well under saddle!

A 2.5 year old who apparently had a bit of an attitude but was going well under saddle, he had a back that had obvious kissing spines yep he was so skinny you did not need the x rays to confirm it.

A 14 year old mare who was a walking skeleton, obviously popped out a foal a year then had a saddle slapped on her to make a riding horse, I graded her about 2 on the condition score, she was a complete sweetheart.

A 12 year old gelding who had also arrived 2 days ago that was the only one we asked to see lunged on a hard surface, this was ignored but a young teen did come in and slap the one saddle on him (obviously one size was fitting all) and fit him in a snaffle complete with crank noseband and flash, as he walked off in front of us obviously scared to death we could see he was uneven. He was taken to the school and the girl attempted to mount him as he swung in circles until the guy who owned the place grabbed his head and bodily held him still. On her first circle round the track the spooked and ran off. She then proceeded to trot him about with no hands on the reins clapping her hands near his ears and holding her arms out to the side, think this was supposed to prove how quiet he was! Shame we had already seen the major spook at the bushes at the side of the school. Poor little guy was obviously still in shock.

At this point Jan who by now had a visible muscle spasm in his cheek! said loudly "I think we can say that from what we have seen this is not your horse, thanks for your time".

As we said our polite good bye's (we were all in total shock at this point) Bri asked the guy so where is your famous stallion? to which he responded with " Dead been dead for 4 years I found him dead in the fence"

Kind of summed it all up really!

It was obvious that he buys a job lot of cobs from a low end dealer in Wales and has them shipped over then this 14 year old kid (actually not getting at her she seemed to be the only one who gave a crap about them!) is the official trainer...Joy!

We drove away in a kind of stunned silence, until Jan finallly broke it by saying "ladies when you get back give your horses a big hug and promise them that they will never ever end up in a **** hole like that with people who should actually be selling cars and not living creatures".

Amen to that!

So not the greatest of starts, Jan is going to make some calls personal recommendations from now on only nothing more of ads or the internet.

Poor little mare is still haunting me though poor little mite convinced if we went back in a month she would also be dull coated, dull eyed and lacking in weight.

So sad and anger making and this idiot was so proud of the fact he had sold over 2000 horses in the last 10 years, god only knows who is stupid enough to buy them.

People should just not be allowed to own animals if they carn't look after them it makes me so angry!!!! such a bad experience and it sounded like the bloke couldn't care less ahhhhh!! good luck finding your horse.:)

How absolutely awful - poor horses :(

I can't see the economics in keeping horses in filth and hunger. Surely it makes sense that they would sell more and for better money if they were looking healthy. Or isn't that how it works?

Beggers belief dosent it awful people ,we had a very similar experaince over here yesterday but sadley waste of time getting on to the rspca as i know they would do nothing about the horses as they just wasnt poor enough for them to be able to act ,very frustrating .

I am 100% behind both of you!

Unless he is depending on the Sympathy purchase, which would have been the only reason for buying any of them.

Poor little sods!

I mean I know about horses so was well aware that they were in horrific condition and I had my YO and instructors with me, horrific thought that some poor novice would just walk in and buy one.

We all felt like we needed a bath on leaving it was that nasty.

Contact the local authority by letter,, they will inspect the premises and take action, ask them to advise you of the action they have taken. if this does not work why do you not ask the RSPCA to visit.
You have independent witnesses which is ideal for a prosecution.

Bucanoo - My YO (We are in the Netherlands by the way not the UK) has already called and reported, they say as long as the horses have access to hay and water and have shelter nothing they can do!

They are aware of him from past complaints but have not been able to pin anything down on him and stop him dealing.

Believe me we tried and are not just sitting thinking "poor horses"

I feel sick.

I know it happens. I know some humans are a bag of *****e, but other humans are meant to find a way of dealing with them (laws, power, etc.).

And we call ourselves civilised.

Indeed Mrs M indeed! Poor little boogers, Bri and I were all for buying the little mare just to keep well and sell on again and also the poor old ex Brood Mare to get some weight on her and well again....Jan although agreeing with the sentiments thought that by actually buying them that would just encourage the Barsteward!

By the way this guy wanted 3K for the little mare and 1500 for the old Broodie.....

it's sickening how some people will treat animals:mad: and frustrating when you can't do anything about it:(
I wonder if the welsh end know what life their cobs are headed for, if all they have seen is the website they may be under the illusion that it's a lovely place etc:(

Sounds like your authorities are as proactive as ours. :( Poor buggers, how do some people sleep at night.

My suspicion is that the welsh end is another dealer who buys cheap at market possibly even for meat then off loads what he can in a job lot to this guy, we strongly suspect he spends a few thousand on a job lot of 6 or so.

Apparently he blames the bad condition on the fact that they have travelled from the UK and are stressed and in bad condition to start with and he is getting them better! However the officials only need to ask the question of How long has each one been there to see that the only ones with any sort of condition at all are the ones who have just arrived.

Sound awful. I would have to report them to someone. I would have also told the owner how underweight I thought they were, and mentioned the mudfever etc and asked him why his horses are in such bad condition. I do find my voice when badly treated animals are involved.

If they were that bad I'd have personally been on the phone straight awat to the RSPCA reporting them,

Yes wouldn't it be great if it was as simple as that?

OP isn't in the UK, so can't do this.

I AM in the UK and I reported something (can't go into details) nearly 3 weeks ago. The USPCA, which should have had a presence anyway, will do nothing because they are too scared. The BHS "welfare representative" has failed to call me back. Another BHS person said she was "not surprised" I was "upset"

What I saw wasn't "upsetting", it was monstrous, appalling treatment of horses and ponies, and the attitude is endemic which means you are swimming against the tide here, and anything you do could result in serious (and I mean violence against person/property/animals/kids) repercussions:eek:

I'd say the OP will do the best she can for these animals, but I doubt the seller will change his attitude - they don't :(

Having said that, just noticed you're not in the UK.

And we did report to the relevant authority here who are aware of him but can not do anything as nothing has actually died in his care of neglect!

Sadly I think the only really positive thing we can do is to ensure that as many people as possible know not to touch with a 20 foot barge pole if no market then he may just realize it is not profitable to keep on!

However 2000 horses in 10 years says that someone is buying them and thus encouraging him to keep on dealing.

Asking on behalf of a friend..

Chavhorse, was there a large blue lorry with a white cab parked up anywhere?
Or a Red cab silver body?

I feel sick too. I was aware that there was a steady flow of horses plucked from the meat trade and shipped to dealers (to palm off as quiet) in the UK from NL and elsewhere, what I didn't know was there was an equally trade of scraggy horses back out. Sickening.

Sad isn't it? Hopefully the word will spread.

On a more positive note, I hope you find a horse soon, will keep my eyes peeled for updates :)

Thank You.

Part 2. (sorry)

Do you have a Dutch TS?
You could mention the conditions, and a "possibility" of irregular paperwork? ;)

(And to those who have said how can this happen...think Jamie Grey)

that's fluffing awful :mad::mad:

reminds me of when i went with a friend to see a warmblood that had been advertised for 4,000. on arrival at a grassless, muddy yard the owner, on the way to the field, proudly told us how recently the horses had all got worms and one horse was so bad 'it was almost like he was pooing just worms'. the 'supersafe' horse she brought out had no muscle, all bones and just a really fluffy coat. all sorts of small health problems. he rolled his eyes at everything but that's about as much as he could do-his legs shook when he was standing still. and since he had no energy to do anything the girl riding kept whacking on his hip bone that was sticking out.
i'd gone to advise and try out the horses before my friend but i refused to ride him and it took a lot of persuasion to stop her pity-buying him. reported to the ILPH and apparently a field officer visited but i never heard back after that ...
