Took my two TB mares up to Melton sales today, last resort really, as I can't get people to come and look at them. They were the nicest there by miles, and, they both came home again, as I had sensible reserves to put off the dealers. We are waterlogged here, no grass yet, I'm booked in to have my hysterectomy so that hopefully I can be back in action before the winter. Oh, and by the way, my husbands recovering from a major cancer op, and now needs chemo. I'm being as positive as I can, but should I put one or both of these mares back in foal to my stallion as their last years foals were such crackers, and got First Premiums at the Futurity?
Perhaps people would prefer a BOGOF???
I don't want to be irresponsible about this, but mine are young mares with everything going for them.
By the way, BIG thanks to VetsBest Friend who kindly came up with me and rode one around. Angela, you're the best!!

What an awful lot you have on your plate, I hope all goes well for you and your husband.

Regards the putting your girls in foal, I am not sure this will help, it could, but I would think it may deplete your chances a little.

How often are the sales, can you go again? That is if you have no luck privately.
Where have you advertised and what are they advertised as? Are they broken?

sorry you are having a bad run .. re your mares melton sales dont usually fetch many good bids. you could contact some of the big AI/ET breeding places to see if they need recipient mares? esp as they have allready bred a foal. putting them in foal again will only give you more work and i guess from your post you are trying to cut down on the work side? good luck, keep smiling.

I just don't have time to ride them regularly, thats why I thought it was worth trying the sales. We rode them about and they were brilliant considering neither had seen anything like that before. I only have about a month before my op, and my husband has to go up to Addenbrookes ( 150 mile round trip) for scans, and soon, chemo. Plus I have a 14 yr old to get to and from school (20 mile round trip) I'm good with pressure, but this is getting a bit much!!

I really feel for you, sounds like a horrendous time you're going through.

There are people looking for cheap projects/prospects. Would project horses be any good for you, assuming they could both go off and have a ridden career?

I don't know the whole background of what you have been trying to do with your mares so apologies in advance if there are ideas you have already tried. Also, very sorry to hear about all your trials - and with your op coming up you will be immobile for quite a while.

So, fields are waterlogged but will be drying off soon, so could you just turn them away for the summer? if all else fails. Otherwise, if they are fit and able to do a job - a good college to loan them too for the students? good sales livery to sell on? project horses - how many horsey students would bite your hand off for a project over the summer?

One of them is on project horses, no joy at all.The other one was on a "loan with a view to buy" and was sent back as being too quiet, quote "not enough spark" I had told the lady that this mare (a TB) was very laid back and had to be told to do anything, but she didn't believe me, I suppose. She was also sent back with blistered legs due to being hibiscrubbed for mud fever. This from someone who I thought was a knowledgeable owner. I'm certainly not going down that route again. Yes, I could just turn them away, but they are 5 and 7 years old, and should be getting on with a job apart from being a brood mare.

how much are you looking for - i know someone in the market for a project ? and what sort of height etc are they?
