So what does your horse do over the summer?

Those who hunt, what are your horses doing now? Turned away, competing, something else? Just interested. Mine is doing loads of hacking and fun rides, got a few HTs coming up, not sure what else, we go to anything ha :)
 
Everything from jumping, to sponsored rides, to hunter trials. Just trying to avoid the stressage (even though we did do a combined training a few weeks back). He gets a two week break when I go on holiday but that’s it.
 
When she hunts a full season she has the summer off but this year she will be in work all summer and will hopefully do a full season next year :)
 
Mainly hacking, although may do occasional competition. She loves working and isn't happy just sitting in a field doing nothing (as she did the year before last when she had a foal!).
 
Ron is having 2 weeks off, then he comes in and we start getting ready for a few events, HT's, lots of hacking and fun rides. First thing though is horse-catching at the P2P.
*note to self, must trim his feathers today!*
he can't have a break when I go on holiday or he would explode :eek:, so my friend rides him for me while I'm away, guess thats the price you pay for having good grass!
 
Mine is pretty useless for anything but hunting, TBH! We just hack, bit of lungeing when I get my 'I am going to sort and sell him' head on and some HT's.
 
Anything we can get to! T's hacked and schooled/jumped all week but I compete as much as I am able. I particularly love hunter trialing, fun rides, beach rides and a bit of showing. I try to get in a bit of dressage, eventing and showjumping - I love the former two, not too keen on the latter but it's good to do lots of different stuff. I even tried a bit of Le Trec last year and really enjoyed that. I'm hoping to have another varied summer and am going to try and get to an adult camp at one point, too :)

Omg I used to go to loads of p2ps (forced to!) and I don't (or didn't then) really do tbs, and I just used to go and gaze at the hunters. I saw some totally awesome horses there. And also it looked so much FUN!!!
 
having the rest of the year off :( lame :( last summer he did everything - HT's, sponsored rides, dressage etc and just had a few weeks off in the middle.
 
Spotty pony having a holiday, comin back in 1st July, coloured one had four weeks off has had bigs hocks so just gettin her back into work, brothers also out in field alltho one is hacked out ocasionally by mother and also used as stweard at p2ps if needed!!

it basically hunting, just that you're not following hounds but horses. Lots of standing about and drinking too! ;) hic....

Most horses in Ireland get turned out after the hunting season, and only brought back in to get fit for hunting. Whiile i'm all for giving them a break, i reckon 6 weeks is plently, and it does them the world of good to take them to showjumping/ dressage/ riding club, or anything else in the summer to give them a full education. My sister has been looking after her brother-in -law's horse all winter. He's a big 17.2hh half bred hunter, charlie brown. He's 11 now, and up to 6 mths ago, had never done anything but hunt. I've known him since he was born, and he was a serious contender for rodeo horse of the year when he was ridden first. He was broken as a two year old, turned away, and came in as if he'd never been touched. He had every trick in the trade for getting you off his back, and it took him 3 years to settle. Until my sister started riding him, he had no idea what cantering on the right leg was, and had two gaits, fast trot or very very fast canter. It's amazing how quickly you can teach an old "dog" new tricks. he is so much calmer now, and can finally go hunter trialing now, without killing anybody. My younger sister, who has very little experience, can now ride him out, just goes to show, unless you try, you'll never know!!!!!
 
everything! fun rides, loads of hacking, dressage, showjumping and some hunter trials. Going to be attempting some one day events as well as some whp classes, pony club, lessons etc. before going to pony club camp in august :) starting to feel a bit sorry for the poor boy..
 
Usually do a full season, then give Ballet a couple of weeks off before eventing over the summer: BE (this year) and PC. :D
 
Out off interest, espically the peapole who keep their horses in a fair amount off work over summer, how many times were you out during the season and were these full, half days or only for a couple off hours??
 
As above... Ron does a few unaff comps and a handful of BE100's over the summer. He also hacks out a fair bit etc etc...

He did 22 days this season, and most we 3/4 days (i.e. out til half 2 3 ish)

Usually I hunt nearly (give or take) every weekend half days, then give her a month off, and do PC stuff.

This year I did about 3 half days (but she was hunting fit the whole winter) because I found our flatwork started to become dreadful, and now am planning near enough a PC/BE eventing season, though I don't do more than 1 or 2 events a month. And I look after her legs like I have OCD.

I hunt mine as much as pos over the winter, about once a week min for a full day, she then has two weeks off after the season finishes and then plays event pony over the summer before having another 3 weeks off prior to cubbing.
