Sorry I know its been done hundreds of times before and ive searched "sarcoids" and read through a lot of the stuff but still at a bit confused with this.

When we bought the boy 3 years ago he had a flat black patch on his chest, it was a bit of an unusual buy so he wasn't vetted, but we just presumed the patch was a sarcoid that had been successfully treated. It has never changed or caused any problems until now and he has no other signs of anything on his body.

Recently though it has developed a sort of scab on top that has got larger and is round. It is about the size of a 5p and about 1/2cm away from the skin, it is black on top but bleeding very slightly around the edges.

Does it look like a sarcoid to the more experienced eye (may sound naive but have never experienced them before!), and if so what should be done?

Obviously thinking vet, but are is there anything else that can be done to help?

When reading up the vet administering liverpool cream seems to be mentioned regularly but also seems to be expenisve, can anyone give me an idea of the price? Also sarc ex is mentioned, but would this work on a redeveloped one?

Thank you for your help

Looks like a sarcoid to me, get the vet to have a look ASAP to decide treatment. Mine had one a few years ago, which was successfully excised. I also know a pony who was treated with Liverpool cream, with great results. The fact that your boys looks quite raw and bleeding means infection could occur easily, so it needs treated one way or another.

yes, looks like a sarcoid to me.
i've dealt with a lot over the years and if he was mine i'd be giving it a really really good squeeze because it looks the sort that just pops out like a disgusting big spot! then fill the hole leftover, with Aluspray or something similar (Aluspray is BRILLIANT stuff, forms a film of aluminium over the wound, so no flies can get in etc, which is very important with sarcoids, you don't want it being spread etc).
of course i'm not a vet and some people may chuck their hands up in horror at this advice, but there's a great vet who is an expert on sarcoids, Alan Walker, and he came numerous times to treat 1 of my horses, and that's how he treated this type, always.

Looks like a sarcoid to me too - the flies can make them flare up and aggrevate them so I would get the vet to check and recommend something the keep the flies off as they will just continue to make it worse.

Homeopathic route worked for Rosie - don't think Liverpool Cream was around when were looking. If the horse is insured, you might be able to get it through that?

If the horse is insured you'd be as well claiming, I didn't, but had to declare when renewing my insurance. My horse is no longer covered for sarcoid, even although I've never claimed for it! There was a thread here about homeopathy a while ago, I'm sure, might be worth a look. But def keep the flies away from it!

Thanks all for the advice, I have put some cream on it to stop the flies and its under his rug too so they shouldn't be able to get to it.

Kerrilli - will try the squeeze tonight, and if that doesn't fix it will get onto the vet. Thanks for your help!

no good whilst its raw, but if it heals over again- i have used thuja tincture on 4 succesfully (diff horses incl CS) and they have dropped off(without causing bleeding) never to return.

My boy has a few sarcoids that appeared over the winter. I have been using Thuja on them and honestly cannot believe the results. Most of his were quite little and all of the little ones have fallen off, he has one slightly bigger one that is shrinking but not quite fallen off yet!

Yes, me three for the Thuja, as long as it's not bleeding. I've had really good results on several horses with it.

I would let the vet look at it, but would certaily speak to them about Sarc-off bloodroot paste, which is only available through vets (not the same as Global Herb's Sarc-ex though similar name!), as I have had very sucessful results with it, and know my vet has used it sucessfully on other horses. I don't think that anything is universally suitable in all cases, however, therefore best to speak to a professional.

We are using some vet cream on our old horses sarcoids atm - can't remember the name, but its human genital wart stuff (Al.... something?), and seems to be working pretty well, the sarcoids (much bigger than that) seem to almost want to be dropping off. I am going to give them a gentle tug this weekend to see if they're ready to come off. They are pretty manky though, thankfully no as many flies atm, but I was putting lots of fly cream on it a few weeks ago :)

Aciclovir? Treats the Herpes Simplex virus? Is that the one?

*disclaimer* No - I don't have genital warts.....but have had shingles :D:D

I would also agree that it looks like it might just go 'pop'. When I bought my Horse he had 2 on the inside of his back leg. They had been treated with Liverpool cream and the area was just hairless skin if that makes sense.

After a few months they both came back. They were were both flat, a bit raised and sort of scaly looking. I started treating them with an ointment from Raven Herbals (I knew the lady through Huskies as opposed to Horses). Over a couple of years both very very slowly started to shrink. Now, oddly, the smaller of the 2 a few months ago suddenly got bigger, like a big pimple. After 3 weeks of this it went just like the one in your picture, then it went 'pop'. Two weeks later you would never know it had been there. The hair has grown back and there is absolutely no trace.

I tried to think what might have caused it to do this. The only think I had changed was starting to feed a prebiotic (Baileys digest plus, for a different reason). I asked the lady at Raven about this and she said feeding a prebiotic would slightly change the PH of the skin. So, I put what happened down to that. The other one has noticeably sped up in it's shrinkage. Needless to say he's staying on that prebiotic.

I think the Liverpool cream failed as it was apparently nigh on impossible to keep the cream in place (was done with previous owner). It also made him very wary of anyone touching him in that area for months.

There is a few articles about high success with the same active ingredient as what's in Zovirax (I think that's Aciclover). I'm not sure what's in the salve I use as she won't say but it's definately got Neem in it (can smell it!!).

Fingers crossed the one on yours goes 'pop' and that's it. It does like it might.

my horse had a couple of sarcoidy things like yours. they slowly grew (not all at the same time, but strangely within a month of eachother), then one day started bleeding and i thought oh dear here we go. kept an eye on them and within a couple of days they fell off and healed over with no problems all by themselves. no need to call the vet or put anything on them.
