So where do you buy horsey things these days?

Last time I had need of buying horse paraphernalia was depressingly back in the 90s. In the 'good old days' you bought stuff from your local tack shop or if you were really lucky the Robinsons Country Leisure catalogue. Honestly, I dread to think how many hours I wasted lusting over things in that catalogue - I always wanted a personalised head collar for my pony and never got one....

Anyway, I digress.... Now that I'm returning to the wonderful world of owning my own horse I need to buy just about everything and have no idea where to start.

Any recommendations for good websites for such basics as grooming kits, head collars, lead ropes etc?

Just been having a nosey on ebay and got so carried away I nearly ordered a personalised leather headcollar with a nice little engraved name plate but realised at the last minute that given I haven't actually found a horse yet that would be putting the cart before the horse ;)

Lol, Im another ebay fan! there are so many ebay shops too and if you have a look on thier websites you can find some more bargains! My only problem is I want it to arrive like NOW! Im not very patient with this kinda stuff ;)
 
ooo i also drooled over those personalised headcollars from robinsons, spent hours flicking through their catalogue a few years ago but personally think it's all gone a bit downhill :( still, it's never too late to get that headcollar ;)

i second 4dobbin! they're really helpful and have a huge variety of things on their website, the postage is always speedy and the prices are good too. buy a lot from them, they're my go-to.
equestrian clearance is really good for bargains too and they tend to do next day delivery for everything without you specifying x
 
If i want something in particular and quickly i use rideaway as although not always the cheapest they have the stock quantities online which is very handy.

Other than that i use equestrian clearance mostly if they have a bargain i want or eBay.
 
thanks for all the helpful suggestions. Can't wait to get properly buying but trying to restrain myself until I find my horse as I'm looking at anything between 15hh and 16.3hh, so quite a size range there! Suspect I'm going to be doing a massive order somewhere the day I find my perfect horse and it makes it through the vetting. I suppose I can get buying on the grooming kit etc now though (unhelpfully my parents got rid of all my old horsey stuff years ago when I moved out so I have literally nothing)

Random question, but on full livery do I still supply my own buckets, haynets etc? I could ring the yard, but that would be the 5th time this week ;)

Good tip - thank you. Is it bad that I really want some of those little name badges like you get for childrens' school uniform?! Although I could quite happily buy everything personalised given half a chance - making up for all the pony things I couldn't afford for my pony when I was younger.

Incidentally my first pony was called Flying Solo :)
 
Firstly, good luck with your new horse, when you get one :)
Secondly, I mainly use eBay for little things and to try find bargains, but I mainly use Equestrian Clearance and Derby House. Have heard good things about Millbry Hill too but never used them myself :)

HAhaha this is exactly like me...! I had to buy almost everything when i got my horse as i'd had a massive gap and had to start from scratch!

I dont rate robinsons at all- think their stuff is cheap and nasty :(
and derby house always used to be so much better has been a bit hit and miss recently- although i have hopes they will improve (new ceo)

For all those bits you really dont need, but are oh-so-pretty i agree with the other poster www.furfeathermeds.com- she has a facebook page which i think is better than the website tbh....and i like the fact that it is clearly a girl who runs the business from her kitchen- and i like supporting her ingenuity!
 
Ebay. I rarely pay for new things, unless I'm desperate. I'm a bargain hunter, but it has to be quality. I won't buy cheap tat, that will last a day or two. So I buy second hand, often the older stuff is better quality and second hand is half the price of new items. But Leatherwork wise, you can often find a bargain on ebay. Although I stick with named brands so I know what i'm getting.

If it's urgent I go to my local tack shop. Rugwise, I find my local Decathlon very good. They often have named brands, I bought two Weatherbeeta mediumweight Combo's for £40 each brand new last year. I'm very pleased with them. Some of their boot (horse) are very good too. I like the overreach boots from there.

Ebay. And I can't fault it! :') As i'm not working much I have little 'income' and therefore I cannot afford 'designer brands at shop prices.' So I go to Ebay.
It's helped me get loads of stuff which I need.

I´ve recently discovered preloved which I´ve found great. It´s cheaper to sell on preloved so some people put stuff on there rather than ebay. If you pay by paypal on preloved you get the same protection.

I´ve bought 90% of my stuff on ebay though

Local tack and feed store, I like to support the local shop and to be fair they seem to be quite cheap and always have a good selection of feed and affordable things (all your bits and bobs...not just fancy expensive stuff and cloths etc) so that's my first port of call which is just in the next village.

Can't be bothered with ordering on line, I like to see what I'm buying and I just like browsing anyway, plus you have to wait for it being delivered and wait in or get it signed for....too much hassle.

Odd things I've bought from DH and ebay, but it's once in a blue moon.

R&R and Rideaway are the bigger stores near me but sometimes you trail there and they have never got what you want in, so if I know what I want I just go local, if I want to have a good browse about and a chip butty or a fish n jockey's whip I go to R&R :D
