..the hunt for winter rugs
crazy.gif

Mine were all begged and borrowed from last year as I'd just got Darcy and realised a little too late that I was low in my rug stocks

Anywho, they were typically quite old, VERY heavy to carry (even when they weren't wet,) but got me through the winter ...

Until I went out with a rug wrecker

My heavy weight combo got the neck ripped off it in litereally what must've been 2 hours use.

So, let the hunt begin!!

I'm looking for a heavy weight combo needless to say

, and I'm sending two of my stable rugs to my local rug -repair to get neck d-rings put on so I don't have to buy a whole new one. Oh, and my medium weight ..just for any horrible rainy days, then I've got to get all the others cleaned..

The list goes on!

Excuse my smugness

Bought rugs for the big girl in the sales at the end of last winter (brand new Dominick turnout should have been £180, was in fact £25......) Will be doubling up as stable / turnout when it's v. cold.....

However, have still to buy rugs for new pony - got a LW turnout so far......

I was very smug when I got my heavy weight combo turnout last year at a hickstead for £20. Then I got all confused, thinking it didn't have a neck etc etc.

Then about 4 months down the line , I pulled it out - it had a neck. So, overwhelmed with joy (ha!) I put it on, only for it to have been ripped through fencing from the rug-ripper and my poor boy rugless

Neck covers are impossible ..so don't get me started on them!

I've just had a stable clear out and have a few rugs and bits and pieces that I don't need anymore (had 4 horses, now have just 1). If anyone's interested, PM me and I'll forward the list to you.

I have started, I have enough l/w turnouts to take me through to Oct but am on the hunt for new mw combos and two h/w combos! Exciting!!

I've become a bit tight with regards to spending money on rugs (otherwise I would have every rug from every range!) and mine has 1 LW TO (detachable neck), 1 x MW TO with full neck, and a heavy MW TO with half neck. I just layer them if he's cold and in the depths of winter, he has the MW with full neck and the half neck one on top.

I don't like layering stable rugs too much though as I think they get too heavy when they're stood in. So the hunt is on for a nice MW full neck (or detachable neck) stable rug.

i got my youngster a load of lw rugs at the beggining of the year in the sale and i just tried them on him this morning and he out grown them so now i am stuck with a load of 5'9 rugs lol

Got a load of rugs from a friend who had sold her horse... 4 rugs (some brand new, all clean and at least 'as new') for £30!

When I got Genie she had Mazzie's old rugs, but she's now grown and they're too small, so I have a load of 5'9s if anybody wants the list.

Oh no, I'm trying to save for a trailer at the moment and this has just reminded me of the big old hole Jasper left in his turnout rug last winter!! Agh! More saving!! I need to get a better paid job!

I have the rambo wug plus for mine and its good as new but am thinking a combo would be better, so yes will join the rug hunt. Hopefully find a bargain at Windsor

-sigh-

I wish I could afford the whole Horseware range

The heavyweight amigo combo is what I'm aiming for , at £120 I think it was !

I'd love a thermatex too ..but that'll be at the end of a long list being I already have 4 medium weight stable rugs - all donations!

If anyone can recommend rugs for mini's I would be a happy bunny.
grin.gif

I have a stocky 32" and a 30.5" who is a slimmer build, and both will need fully kitting out for indoors and out.

LOL yes they are expensive but last for years as my boys aren't trashers and they fit really well. Bit gimmicky with the 3 surcingles but hey ho

Am pretty well sorted for winter rugs, however would love a Thermatex, a Newmarket Fleece and a decent rainsheet turnout...

However, as OH is still recovering from minor heart failure after discovering just how many rugs Taffy already has, I don't think I should purchase any more at the moment - well not unless I can buy them and sneak them to the yard without him noticing...:-)

Do minis need rugging? I thought they were quite hairy little beasts.

These two are oap's so its only right they should stay snug and warm over winter.

Nooooooo, I have 3 horses and 6 winter blankets, that will do. I stay away from my tack store it is a BAD place full of shiny things.

Mine is a very hairy little beast, he will be out and unrugged unless the snow gets deeper than him!

That is a brilliant picture

I had to replace my HW Turnouts last year because the neck was systematically removing Star's mane - still have them in the shed, clean, proofed, 6'3", not sure what to do with them really.

I need to rug 5 from scratch thanks to some b*stards who decided they wanted my rugs as well as everything else and burgled my barn a couple of weeks ago. Unless some-one is looking for a very fast 13.2hh jumping pony..................then I will only need to rug 4
smile.gif

2 ponies wear 5ft 9 and 2 ponies wear 6ft for anyone that is wondering what to do with their rugs....................
