So...who IS a good role model for the next generation?

couldn't agree more. It is unbelievable the tantrums that some of the horsey worlds "top" riders throw behind closed doors

mary king defiantly. she is such a nice person, loves her horses, is kind to everyone and is a real team player. shes definitely my favourite!!

I don't follow sports and therefore don't know what these people are like, and I can't recognise many of them. However, I've met Geoff Billington and he's lovely

I think Ben Maher is fantastic too.
I did watch Hickstead today and was disgusted by Ellens reaction.

I think WW is a better rider(IMO) and he never seems to lose his temper. I don't know who is a good role model but have been impressed with his riding ever since he started competing in horse classes, seems to be a nice quiet rider and most of the time the horses go well for him.

Geoff Billington is funny - his demos make me laugh. It is his career but he is quite lighthearted about it. It is hard to say who would be a good role model as you never see what goes on behind closed doors, I hadn't even hear of EW acting like that before today but apparently it's not a 1st.

I like watching teams fredericks programme aswell and seeing how they train the horses. They seem nice from what I've seen.

Pippa and William Funnell!! What an awesome pair!! Did anyone see them at Hickstead today after William had won? She gave hubby a quick hug and kiss then took ponio off the groom and made STACKS of fuss of him- glad to know where her priorities lay!

There are plenty of really wonderful jockeys out there. A rider who treats their animal fairly, with respect and kindness - and recognises that it too is a professional, gets my vote every time.

I personally would have to say either
A) William W - He is a fantastic young rider that allows his horses to do the job without faffing about

OR

B) John W ~ no explanation needed

Can I just say with regards to Ellen today, yes ok everyone gets frustrated and no I have never met or or ridden any of her horses, but being a professional you would have thought she would have shown a little more decorum.

Geoff Billington and Tim Stockdale (he is absolutley lovely) but for the younger generations joe whitaker

I used to work as a SJ groom many years ago and witnessed Tim Stockdale be particularly unpleasant - not to his horse but to his groom, put me off him completely.

Mr Billington a good role model? None of you lot can ever have been drinking in his company lol...

Joking aside, he is a great guy - he helped me warm up at a show one day as I only had my mum there and she doesn't know enough to dodge big horses and fence hogging grooms for a 1.20m open, then he came and watched my round - how often do you get an Olympian warming you up for a class on the depths of winter at a show in Scotland

? I think the 'old school' are still the best role models, and agree with the above about the Funnells yesterday - was lovely to watch!

In general I have no idea about what goes on behind closed doors, but judging by what happens in the open Rodrigo Pessoa is very high up on my list of role models. I don't know how many times I've seen Baloubet du Rouet have some own ideas about f.ex. approaching a fence sideways without Rodrigo getting upset.
John Whitaker, shouldn't need any explanation.
