We never had any mud! Plenty of grass (safely fenced off 
) and dust bowls forming full of shetland fuzz. Although moving midwinter was a huge pain I am forever grateful that we're off the horse-sick clay soil and have a lovely sandy patch to call our own. They were galloping around on this in the heavy snow last week and it just bounces back.
