I have a 2.5 yr old Beagle called Dexter - he is an absolutely lovely dog. This afternoon he started acting strange. He was running loopy round the garden (even though he is a bit mad this was more mad than usual!) and whenever he stopped he would stand for a bit, then his back end would start to wobble, then his back end would collapse and he would sort of lay in a real awkward position sort of swaying from side to side. He repeated this a few times, this was at about 2pm, by 2.30pm I had him at vets. By the time we were at vets he could still walk but kept losing balance, he seemed unaware of the other dogs in the vets which again is really rare for him - he is a very over excitable dog!

By the time vet saw him he had very pink eye lids, was not prodcing saliva, was dribbling wee and swaying all over the place.

He is still at vets and I am now sick with worry, vet has run bloods which are normal, they think either poison, central nervous system problem or stroke type thing - so basically they are not really sure. he has not shown signs of improvement. He has never demonstrated this type of symptoms before.

I am so, so worried.... does anyone have any ideas, expereinced something like this.... any help really appreciated!

Here is a picture of him healthy http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2421068&l=685854058e&id=707351492

Oooh Hun what a shame. Have no idea what it may be but he is in the very best place. Have all fingers and toes crossed for him and hugs to you.

Oh, I am so sorry for you - you must be so worried

It does sound like an infection but I guess as the bloods are normal it's not.

The only slightly similar thing I have seen is when our cat started to lose her back end (all wobbly and stumbling) suddenly - it turned out to be an enormous abcess that had not bulged above the skin, but and gone down underneath.

I very much hope the vets find out whats wrong with Dexter soon and that he makes a full recovery.

That sounds really frightening. Sorry can't think of anything that might cause these weird symptoms but I hope the vet can work it out and that he's better soon.

It does sounds like a central nervous system problem, which could be resulting from a poison. beagles are quite sensitive dogs so it is not uncommon.

I would be less worried about strokes as "genuine" strokes do not occur very often (if at all!) however dogs can have similar symtpoms to a stroke which is called a doggy stroke! however they are generally more severe than what you have mentioned!

I dont blame you for being worried as it can not be pleasant for you!
You have a very pretty (and happy looking) beagle from you picture

Hope she is ok!
