I've seen loads of people post about if they think a price is reasonable etc. and I often wonder what the 'average person' pays for a horse... So if you were seriously going shopping for a pony in the next month what would you expect to pay for the horse you plan to buy (whatever it is from a 12.2 pony to a 17hh Grade A showjumper...)
 
For the horse I'd like to get [early teens SJ schoolmaster to compete up to 1.10/1.15 potentially] I'd be looking at 3 - 5k.

If I didn't go down that route I'd be looking at a project ex racehorse probably for under 1k.
 
I'm looking for a mature all rounder, I was going to spend up to £2k but since I started shopping around I've decided to go to £3k. I won't be asking a great deal from my new friend when I find him, just fun.

This is true! It would make more sense to say 'how much on ave would you pay for a pony/showjumper/allrounder/dressage horse etc. And all this would do is give you is an insight into individual peoples budgets and willingness to spend :D
 
But not everyone wants a 'dressage horse/sj/hacker' what I want to know is what is the 'average horse price' and what can be inferred from that ie what is the average horse?

For me, I want something safe, sane and that I can have fun with - a bit hacking, take it around a SJ/XC course, do a simple dressage test etc. I don't mind backing or bringing one on, hence I've never paid more than 1k - and don't intend to, simply because I've managed to find what I want without spending loads.

If on the other hand, I was looking for something special to go further in XC or SJ etc, then I would prob. pay more.
 
For me, it would totally depend on how much money I had to spend! If I had £1k, I'd be looking to spend up to £1k. If I had £3k, I'd spend up to that, and if I had £5-7k, I'd be happily looking for my dream horse (from what I see when window-shopping, a small average PRE to do dressage and hack on is in that price range, which is ideally what I'd be looking for if I had that budget).

Of course, if I had won the lottery I'd be looking to spend £5-20k each on a few different horses, for me and as an owner for others to ride and compete.

So I really feel like I should tick all the boxes :p
 
OK, if I add up the prices of my horses (all very different types and ages) and divide by the number of horses, the average price is £1333.33
 
My average was lowered because I was given a retired TB as a companion for free. I had to include her because she is very good at her job and will nanny weanlings which is exactly what I needed her for. :D She's fab.
 
As much as I had?! If I had megabucks, I would buy the safest schoolmaster I could find, regardless of price. For my sister, a nice eventer so looking at £15k+.

As it stands however, we have no horse-buying money so we loan!
 
Mine is £1222 over the last almost 40 years - increased by the ID mare that I bought when prices were high.
The lovely mare that I've just bought only cost me £200 more than a similar one that I bought over 20 yrs ago. Although I haven't included the cost of the stable that we had to build for her!
 
Depends what I am looking for. When looking for Fany had to move upwards on price because she is a bombproof, weight carrying cobby type so when ever I phoned about one it was gone. They were in demand.

Captain was a major project and so was cheaper despite having excellent pedigree and having been a comp. horse.
