For the last year or so I have been working really hard with Frenchie on our flatwork, trying to encourage her to work actively from behind, into a soft outline, encouraging as much self-carriage as possible. I have regular lessons with an instructor and French has come on loads (her hind legs actually come of the ground now!), however she still has a tendency to lock her jaw against me and as much as I know a lot of this is down to my position, and a different bit isn't going to solve the problem. However I was wondering if a different bit my just encourage her not to fix quite so much iyswim!
She is currently in a small single-jointed eggbutt snaffle, and I was wondering about trying a loose ring french link something similar to this but a lot cheaper (my bank balance is looking a little worse for wear!)

Ok, so any ideas appreciated!
Thanks

Also this may sound really stupid, but can you use a bradoon as a normal bit? She has a very small mouth and face and the small rings seem to fit better iyswim?

I have the one in the first link, as you know, and I am very very happy with it. What I like about it is that it's very slightly curved (my previous one, also a Sprenger loose ring french link snaffle, was straight and I feel Rauti is happier in the new one).

No comparison with a single-jointed snaffle, as there is no nutcracker effect. Also the loose ring is supposed to be kinder as no risk of pinching.

PS On the Loesdau website it's cheaper (about £80) but maybe that's still expensive for what you want to spend?

Ok cool, thanks. I didn't want to hijack your post hence this one :D I really like the look of your bit, I could just do with a (much) cheaper alternative. I'm not sure how the Sprenger's compare to the Neue Schule as a cheaper alternative?

Sorry, was just browsing on the Loesdau website - they do have a cheaper version of the Sprenger Dynamic, it's less than £15 - might be worth a look?

(From the homepage just type 'Wassertrense' in the search bar 'Schnellsuche')

Cos I'm an eejit! Did you mean one of these?

OK thanks so much! The lozenge looks differnt....then again my bit repetoir concists of a small eggbutt snaffle (apart from a 5min encounter with a pelham at the point in her carrer she'd deciding bolting was a fun thing to do, during which i quickly decided schooling was the answer not a different bit!)

Yes it does look different, though I can't decide whether it's just a bad picture or if they're all like that....

If you can wait 10 days I can have a 'feel' for you at Pferd International (where Loesdau always have a huge stand) and see how it compares to the Sprenger?

We've managed in the snaffle for nearly 2 years, I'm sure another couple of weeks won't make a difference, that is if your sure you don't mind?
My other query was that it looks to have quick thick mouth pieces (?) and French has quite a delicate mouth...

Yes, looks straight rather than curved, but maybe it's not so essential for you to have it curved?

Agree with the thickness but again maybe it's just the photo, will have a look for you :)

Brill, thank you so much :D The one she has now is curved so I'd probably rather stick with curved if possible. Also there is far to much nice stuff on that website, why do the German's (I assume it's German...) get all the fancy nice gear? :p :D

I know, and all the dressage stuff is so cheap. And in Munich the Loesdau stand has 10% off anything in the catalogue for the duration of the fair. Oh my poor poor purse :(

My pony was in a bog-standard egg-butt for a while, but not particularly fond of it. Very reluctant to accept a contact. He also has a rather small mouth. Now he's in a bog-standard loose-ring French link, and much happier with it. I think it was less than £20.

Yup, they have a really nice bridle that I now really want-though it seems very cheap which worries me slightly... (this one http://images.loesdau.de/xlimage2.php?i=52050-l1.jpg) ...maybe I'm just used to paying English prices! (then again I don't understand the German, so it could be rubber for all I know! lol)

That's interesting to know, thank you.
