went to see the lady about a horse (as mentioned in previous post), it went well. The family seem lovely, so do the horses. I am going up to ride tomorrow, so fingers crossed we get on. It's looking along the lines financially as £20pw (about half the costs they reckon), help with the chores (mucking out etc) and use of horse whenever. She is a 20yo school mistress 'with atitude', I will probably be mainly hacking on the forest.

So the options are: 1) take on this horse. It's a regular financial comittment, with some chores and unlimited access. It's happy hacking, although this is probably something that suits me for now. Family are lovely, small private yard. Riding paddock for summer. 2) Stay at the riding school. £15 for 1 ride, £25 for 2 (a week). Few chores or committment. No ties. However, no guarentee of a particular horse. Hacking and school available, possibly more opportunities in the future eg lessons, competitions. Lots of people around, however yard is getting busier as summer approaches. 3) Buy a horse. Although this is the eventual goal, not something I want to rush into!

Thoughts?

depends if you can use horse as much as want and have you got time to ride during week or is it only weekends - do you have time for all the chores? if so £20 is ok. (once you add in livery, feed, worming, shoes, ins) its alot more than that. so cheaper than geting your own.

Yeah unlimited use, I will have more time to ride in the week come summer, but for now it's weekends and holidays. Chores will be when I'm up, so should be manageable!

It is a good stepping stone from riding lessons with no chores to getting your own. It will break you in gently and you will learn a lot more than at the riding school. There is a lot to learn and by part sharing, this is a good opportunity as you are not soley responsible 100% of the time and you have someone else there who knows the horse very well.

I've had loans and shares before, the riding school was a'filling the gap' while hoping for something more ideal. At the moment, I'm getting through the rest of the difficult NQT year then hopefully will be able to committ to my own in the forseeable future

Thank you for the advice though
