I cannot get whole oats anywhere so have bought a couple of bags of bruised oats. Okay to soak these instead of the whole oats? Will they provide the same benefits?

Why did you try for whole oats ? The whole point about buying them crushed or bruised, is that the hard husk is cracked, so the horse's digestive system can get the most out of the grain.

There is a difference between naked oats, where the husk has been removed, but to be honest, you want that fibre part of the grain, it is very good for the horse.

Soak whole oats and they are easily digestible too, at least, my horses have been digesting them happily for a few years now.

Where I live I would have to order in any sort of oats other than whole.

I want whole oats as I want the maximum nutritional value and the full fibre content they offer. Crushing, rolling and, to a lesser extent, bruising oats depletes their feed value over time.

In answer to why I would soak them: it is to open the cereal and start the enzymatic breakdown. It assists the horse in digesting the grain fully.

I feed whole oats and have had to substitute them for bruised oats on the odd occasion that the feed store has run out. They were pretty much identical to look at and I soaked them in the same way. I didn't notice any difference in my horses behaviour so would assume there's not much difference.

Don't know where abouts in the country you are Spyda but if any of your feed merchants stock Dodson & Horrell they will be able to get whole oats for you. Ours were def D & H and cost around a £5/6 a sack.

Hi, yes I am buying the D&H bruised oats but did not want to wait to week or two for my branch of Mole Avon to order them in.

I've been soaking the bruised oats for a few days now and they are great. Smell lovely and remind me of feeding boiled barley all those years ago when I could be bothered! The horses seem to be enjoying them and.... so far, no one has turned into a raving lunatic on them. Not like when I fed molassed sugar beet! Now THAT made a nasty difference.

Yes, I feed all grains soaked, whole, bruised or otherwise
