What do you all soak your hay in? The yard I used to keep my horse at had two baths and as most people soaked their hay, they were needed. However I am now keeping my horse at a friend's place and I am the only one stabling (need to get some weight off her). I am also the only one who wants to soak my hay so a bath would be a bit unecessary IMO. I have a large bin but I'm not sure I'd be able to haul the hay out again as we have no fixtures/fittings to use as a pulley. I could use the large Tub Trug (about 80 litre) I give her the hay in in the stable, but I was wondering if anyone had any bright ideas?

My husband managed to put a little tap on the bottom of a wheelie bin, it was great as you could wheel it to different areas which I found reduced my mess whilst filling. I used to open the tap and leave it for a few mins to drain.

We have a too many now to do that so we use haylage, even the fat pony does well on this without getting obese!

I picked up a couple of the rubbery feed/water tubs from Frogpool. One small one for breakfast hay, you can get 2 sections of hay in them and a huge one for tea, you can get 4-5 wedges in at a push and no need for hay nets

I used a dustbin, and just tipped it over when I had finished, so the hay ( in a net ) would float out - it was too heavy to lift!
I then went over to steaming, and used the dustbin with a lid on.

I'd do that but we don't have a drain so our field may get a bit wet!

Why do you steam as opposed to soak?

You can get speacialist hay steamers if you google hay steamer it may come up, or there ae now special hay baths in glittery blue and pink or how about a long flower pot or oil drum cut in half?

I soaked in a large tub trug all winter.
You just have to be careful when emptying as you can really pull on your back.
I ended up using a bedding bag with holes cut in the bottom so when I lifted the hay in the bag out of the tub the water drained out quickly from the bottom - worked really well

I got a water butt from B&Q for £9.99 it holds two large haynets and has a tap at the bottom and a lid. The nets get totally submerged and you just open the tap to drain it.

Well I've stuck a few sections in a haynet this morning and put them in a large bin. The bin is positioned under a tie ring so I can haul the haynet out using the ring. I hope that works!

I spotted in B&Q a black plastic water tank (the type you would stick in your loft) and it was £35 (tehre were bigger and smaller ones) - not sure the volume of water it holds but was bit enough for me to soak 2 haynets in - plus really robust, the plasticy stuff wont become brittle.
