I normally feed haylage in the winter and hay in the spring but with all the laminitis around at the moment in horses/ponies that have never had it before, I'm becoming increasingly concerned about sugar levels.

I still have the rest of the winter's supply of haylage and hay is really hard to get at the moment, would soaking make it safer to feed? Has anyone done this?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Yes soaking it will. Just soak as you would hay.

Most people don't do it because of the cost of haylage. I did it last summer for my pony would got lami, and I ran out of hay, but had plenty haylage left.

I think she prefered to soaked hay actually.

I've done this last summer when my usual suppliers ran out and all i could get hold of in big bales was stuff which my horses found to be like rocket fuel!

I remember replying to a similar post last summer- heres a link:

It's fine to do though if you can't get hold of hay, I just would rinse it out rather than leave it to soak for too long. It certainly didn't hurt our horses anyway!

Thank you. I know it's not ideal, but hope it would be better than nothing.

Hay around here is £8 a small bale and only if you can get it!
