So I had my mega physio lady out this am to see to Soap, and she is worth her weight in gold
I'm not sure if anyone will remember but she used to event in the 1980's and even represented GB on her horse 'The Done Thing' so she has a huge wealth of horsey knowledge and over 10 years experience at Newmarket so having an exracer I'm trying to event is pretty much a busman's holiday for her!
He seemed much perkier today, no more runny nhose or eyes, and his coat was smooth and shiney again, amazing to see how quick that can change. She gave him a thorough MOT and only found a tiny bit of tight muscle on his right hand side behind the saddle, but soon sorted that, she also checked his neck as he pushed himself off the trakhena with it and it's perfect
I was telling her what happened and why I got her out and all the little indicators which now with hindsight add up to him having a virus and tying up
I explained how he went, and how afterwards when we finished I untacked him on my own with no one holding him and he just stood like a rock, which now I think about it is odd as normally he's still full of running after xc, and that I thought he looked 'humped up' with his tail clamped, I slid my hand behind his tail and gently lifted it up to guage the resistance and it was pretty firmly clamped against his bottom.
She and I came to the conclusion that all this seemed to indicate that he has picked up a virus last wkend at Larkhill, I only managed to ride twice in the week 2 short schooling sessions so didn't notice any fatigue etc as it was only 20mins work, and the virus progressed to it's peak by sunday at the ht when he tied up.
The signs I missed I put down to other causes as he has never tied up before, and she thought that if we hadn't been to the ht and had just hacked out instead and still went to Moreton this wkend we probs wouldn't have noticed as he would have got over it by then.
Signs missed....
Dull starey coat - put this down to winter coat coming through, and having rolled in alot of dust
Gacky eyes - put this down to high winds as he always has a bit of eye goo anyway
quiet behaviour - not unusual for him as he is very laid back
runny nose - only started at the ht, and thought maybe it was dur to him having a hay net to travel with rather than his usual haylage so dust might have made his nose run
If only they could speak!
anyhoo on the positive side he is MUCH MUCH perkier today looking back to his old self, she was really pleased with his muscles, and said he was looking really good, and the strongest he has been, and that she detected no damage or ill affects from tying up, but agreed with me that wd from Moreton and giving him a months holiday was a good idea.
So I feel v relieved that I can now piece together what actualy happened as it was such un-Soap behaviour, and also feel extra guilty because he must have felt like rubbish but still jumped anyway
He is off out on holiday from weds this week to pester my old retired boy, and no doubt bite and bully him! poor Rex!

Dustry is no no longer 'Mr Lover lover'
and I am collecting him on Friday so will make sure I take some 'before' pics when he arrives. Quick question to those who have stud/gelding knowledge - How long till all the testosterone is out of hyis system? I have been told 3 months, and what are the associated affects of decreasing bone density as a result of gelding?... I have been told that it affects bone density, so to bear that in mind, but that it is back to normal standard after approx 3/4 months, is that correct?????...
