Boo has come in tonight with a VERY hot, swollen near hind

I know what I think the location of the swelling smacks of, but I'd appreciate your thoughts and whether I am over reacting

The pics aren't fab, but you can just see the swelling down the back of the leg, and how it wraps around the fetlock on both sides.

What with Rage going in tomorrow for x-rays to confirm the scintigraphy which said KS, this really feels like the last straw

Is he lame?

Friends horse came in with similar last week. He was sound, cold hosed, stuck some gel on it, turned him out and it went down by the next day.

I've not trotted her up yet as I had no one around to watch or lead her while I watched...

I'm clinging onto the fact that it is just a knock, but having been down the field with them all day, she hasn't so much as broken out of a walk

I put ours down to a Windgall, just a bit of concussion. One of his other legs were a little bit up. He's a big moving, long legged horse.....

I'm rubbish at telling from pics but if she has just been walking around the field all day surely it must just be a knock? If the family arent home yet and you want someone to trot her up just text me and I can come over to try and put your mind at rest

We are about to trot her up now - gut feeling is that it is just too angry to be a knock. She is sooooo thin skinned and delicate that I am positive that if she had knocked it there would be evidence, a bare minimum of removing a patch of hair, but her style is more usually to take the skin off the whole area!

Thanks for the offer though C, you are wonderful!

Just come in now...
It is even more swollen than it was before. She is lame, probably about 3/10ths.
Not sure now whether to leave her a couple of days to see how it pans out, or just to bung her on the trailer in the morning to accompany Rage so she can have it scanned.
Argh!

Oh pants, flipping horses

I think if I were you I would try and think honestly about how you would feel if you DIDNT have the worries about Rage too. IF you are confident that you would be just as concerned then take her to be scanned tomorrow.

BUT also bear in mind how easy it is to think the worst in these sort of situations, so maybe you would usually give it a couple of days and see what happens?

Easy for me to say I know, hugs for you

Oh dear. Acolyte's advise was good. If you think you'd normally get it scanned quick do it. Otherwise maybe give it a few days. Maybe get some bute from the vet. I'd probably take her and see what the vet says.

Good luck.

Thanks you two!
If it stays as swollen as it is I don't think she will be scannable anyway - there is too much fluid there atm for a decent pic

Usually in this situation I would give her a couple of days...
Just need Tills and Fia to oblige now, so that EVERYONE can have a vets bill this month!

Galaxy, she is buted already

I can send my dogs over too if you like? Oh no, silly me, they have had their bills already this month

Hope you see some improvement after a couple of days, fingers crossed for you

ok bit random but what are her digital pulses like? One of my horses came in hopping lame with a swollen and hot front leg about 3 weeks ago - day after an event. I panicked thinking the worst and immediately called the vet. turns out it was an abcess - took 2 weeks of poulticing to get all the yuck out but I really thought he had either broken a bone or done a tendon.

If you can test around her foot to see how she responds to pressure that would help but a raging pulse in that leg may suggest an abcess. bear in mind that the bute will not help at all if it is an abcess, so don't panic yet - I know it is difficult!!

fingers crossed for you!

Not random at all!
I am utterly paranoid about laminitis, so pulses and hooves are checked religiously twice a day - no pulse, no heat in the hoof.
Farrier is out at 7 in the morning though, so will get him to tick off any hoof related boxes for me.
Thanks for your suggestion, and hope your lad doesn't scare you like that again!

Is there any swelling further up the leg towards the hock - just wondered as lymphangitus can sometimes start off like this? Personally would get the vet to do a quick check to put your mind at rest, it is possibly something like that which can be treated simply with a course of antibiotics?????

She's very prone to getting infections - even the slightest nick leads to an elephant sized leg if I don't pounce on it immediately - luckily she doesn't seem to mind the taste of norodine

Farrier ruled out an abscess, so still in two minds whether to take her today - will probably decide at the very last minute!

I would take her... it will put your mind at ease and you're already going
wink.gif

It could be something and nothing, but if she is prone to infections I would be inclined to have it looked at.

If there is any indication that its tendon or ligament the vet will tell you to wait 7 days so the swelling can go down.Ive had this with my horse and daughters only last month.Hope you are as lucky as me with daughters it turned ut to be bruised tendon. You will need to support with bandages and cold hose twice a day.Hope its ok dont panic

Try cold hosing twice a day and bandage with cold Animalintex to draw out the heat. My mare hit a show jump and caught a pole across the back of the tendon and I did the above and had her right in a week. Her leg was up like an elephant in the beginning and she was very lame but by the evening with an Animalintex bandage she was 75% better. You will need to gradually ween her off the bandage like only putting it on at night after a few days if she starts to come right. If you are not happy after a day or so get the vet.

If you're already going then take her as well, for what it's worth you will at least then get peace of mind or know the worst.
It looks as if it might respond to a spa treatment, but is that feasible for you?
Sometimes you wonder why you have horses..(it's character building! HH runs and ducks to avoid the rock aimed at her head...)
