Hello

My mare has a soft lump on the outside of her hind leg (golfball sized). Its above the feltlock joint and below the shank.
She doesnt appear to be lame or in pain when i touch it.
I hosed it for about 10mins today and then put her in her stable but i cant work out what it could be.
I looked to see if there was a seed or bite mark but couldnt detect anything.
It also looks swollen on the inside of her leg but not noticable.

Any suggestions on what it could be and what i should do?? Turn out tomorrow/bandage/hose/dont hose/box rest.......

Today she was turned out with another mare (not shod). So she could have been kicked in the field but would that cause a golfball sized lump.

Many Thanks

Could it be a windgall? Only guessing, sorry not much help. I am sure there are some people on here who can give a better idea.

Thanks. Ive never heard of Windgall's before but on searching they say they appear on older horses or horses in hardwork. She is 14yo now and has just started working again after 2years off. Ive only been lunging in walk and trot in the pessoa for 2 weeks so not rushing her.

Do you know if Windgall's disappear or do they stay there forever?

Maybe i should look into a joint supplement if it doesnt go down over the weekend.

Many Thanks

Right place for a windpuff. Could also be a bite etc. Windpuffs are fluidy and squidge when you poke them. they disappear in 3-4 days but cold hosing and tendon cooling gels help.

Windpuffs become windgalls if they harden and become more regular/permenant. They inflame with exercise esp too fast work or hard trotting, roadwork etc. Sore after a hard ride but then resolve themselves with a few days rest. More annoying than serious but don't ignore thm cos they are sore if you keep working hard despite them.

They are more common in horses with long pasterns. It is just fluid filling at the bottom of the tendon sheath but it feels like a lump cos it can't go anywhere and is under pressure.

Yes it is all squidge and soft and loose. And i thought it looked smaller after hosing it but then i thought it must have just been my eyes.

She did go out with a new mare today so maybe they have been playing about and with the ground here being hard its swollen up.

I will hose again in the morning and see how it goes? Is it ok to continue lunging and turning her out?

If they kept returning or start to go hard i will look into a joint supplement for her.

my mare has recently came up with a windgall with little swelling on the inside with no lameness thought I would get to check cause I was starting fitness work for long distance riding well they sent me for a scan to my horror she had a torn deep flexor tendon not saying yours is the same just be careful good luck
