Soft shell competition jackets

Ah now I like the jacket Rosiesowner, and it looks fab on you because you are lovely and slim, but I would have this unbecoming bulge if I wore a jacket that short!

I have decided to go to my nearest place that stocks Pikeur - because I like their jackets even if I don't like the prices! - and I will try a load on to see what looks least awful :D I am happy to go up a size or even 2 to avoid the skin-tight look, and I can always get the sleeves shortened if necessary as there is a great seamstress in my little town :)

I'll say it is also a really stretchy material that pulls you in-I have a lower tummy podge and it hides it well! The pikeur jackets are so lovely though, I've been lusting after this one for when I have a spare £415!!!!

Or perhaps this one at a bit more of an affordable price...

Hahahaha you're welcome, I'm always on the lookout for show outfit inspiration. When Chills and I are getting out and about I really want to settle on a 'look'. I've been through tweed, burgundy (which I liked but the softshell material was gross), black (again softshell and just not the right shape for me and was hanging off me-I like a skintight look!!) and now onto navy which I think I will stick with just glammed up a bit. Though I do love AlexHyde's grey...

Best thing is to go try loads on and see what you like :).

I have the Fairplay Bea, I love it, it is stretchy and easy to wear (after coming from showing in heavy wool) however it is not forgiving. Though I am fairly single minded and I like so, others can look at my rolls of flab in wonder ;).

Cutaways are even more unforgiving but good for giving the illusion of longer legs for us vertically challenged people :o.

From looking respectable:

To roleypoley

I know this is more flattering really

But so hot and restrictive!!

You know what, AH, I think your new outfit is much lovelier! The navy is smart but the grey really makes you stand out from the crowd :)

I've yet to see a short jacket that I think looks nice, on anyone :p

My most flattering jacket is a foxley navy wool one, it gives one a fabulous waist :D

I also have the shires one that I think rosiesowner has, which is a fab jacket!

As well as several showing jackets, still love my grey one as I thought the black was a bit draining on me, and my horses make me work too hard for wool :o...

I tried on a technical fabric jacket one day whilst browsing in the saddlery never expecting to like it, but it was a really flattering fit. It is a longer length and I love the stretch which makes it much more comfortable to wear than the normal wools. It's easy to wear in the summer and I can just chuck it in the washing machine.
I must say though I am not a fan of the short styles which seem popular with young people.
Here is the offending jacket, looking very smart I think.

Silv, that is a more becoming length and cut, but ANY garment made with the man made fabric used for these "technical" jackets (what does that even mean?) is going to pucker on all the seams and anywhere that bends, there is no drape. Fashion is fashion, but anyone who looks at themselves in one of those bumfreezers and says "I look fabulous" is deluded - I've judged 100's and not ONE looks good, even on the slimmest, neatest body.

They also feel like slime (I have tried some on: yuck).

I have a pikeur sarissa II softshell jacket in navy-Pikeur always fits really well and washes and wears superbly. I think it looks smart, it's a nice dark colour and is cut well. Sure, maybe not quite as super smart as wool, but much easier to keep clean, if it rains I don't get soaked, and the mesh half lining makes competing in the heat much more bearable. I have a lovely wool tweed I use when I venture out showing every now and again, but for dressage I prefer the more user friendly jacket!

See I don’t mind a bit of seem puckering. I wear tech fabrics for all my other activities because they are more comfortable, I find it odd that for posh riding I don’t do the same. It’s been much more pleasant hunting in my nice Musto winter coat than it is my heavy wool hunt one :). But that’s because I am overall a comfort over look person :)

That’s definitely better silv!

See I’m the opposite 😂 I think the wool ones look really really unflattering on everyone I’ve seen them on. They are always too baggy and frumpy and long in the arms etc. I just think they make people look a bit novicey but that’s my personal opinion. I personally wouldn’t be seen dead in one haha. I think the technical jackets such as animos (provided they are the right size) look a lot more flattering as they are fitted (both in the long and shorter lengths, I’ve got a mixture of both), I’ve not seen them look bad on anyone tbh!

I compete a lot in Europe though and I’ve never ever seen anyone In a wool jacket, only ever the smart technical jackets which are a life saver in the Spanish heat!

lol I am so pleased I started this thread, lots of ideas and opinions so thank you :)

A key question for me is - do people find that the technical/soft shell jackets are less restrictive? I always feel I’m in a straight jacket when I wear my wool jacket (it is also too tight now, but that’s another matter....!!)

Yes, so much less restrictive! And my technical is much more fitted than my wool one was too.

Don't know much about soft shell jackets, but do wonder about the sizing of riding jackets. I am a size twelve (at the max) but have a size 16 Dublin tweed jacket, as otherwise they are too tight across the shoulders, does make them a bit big everywhere else mind. Now I expect that in ordinary clothes, but would have thought that riding clothes might have made allowances for bigger shoulders. On a preference note, I do not like "bum freezers" on anyone, even small children.
