Just wondered whether anyone has used Keratex hoof gel as something to keep soft soles waterproof to avoid getting even wetter.

Horse is in for 2 weeks in an attempt to dry out and harden soles but will be turned out after that for about 2 hours a day. If he has Keretex hoof gel on during the day and then Keratex hoof hardener at night when his feet are dry to harden them up will this help or are there any other products I can use?

Sorry for sounding stupid but not that clued up on this!!

Had a lot of trouble with my older horses' feet this summer, he has very thin soft soles etc.

The wet weather also didn't help so had him in for several weeks (on the vets' advice. I bought a load of disposable nappies and having cleaned his feet each day with a stiff brush applied eucalyptus and iodoform, also from the vets and cheaper than Keratex.

I then applied a dry nappy and held it in place with vetwrap and duct tape, changing it daily. The nappies helped 'draw' the moisure from the feet as well as giving the sole some protection and they are cheap.

The farrier was had never heard of nappies being used like this but had to agree that it worked! Horse now has nicely hardened soles which have also thickened up and he's also barefoot but that's another (long) story.

My farrier suggests using thick bleach neat on the soles of my TBs poor quality feet. I didn't like the sound of that but he absolutely swears by it. In the end, the bleach kept splashing on my clothes and we compromised by using iodine instead. That seemed to do the trick as well. You need to keep at it for about a month before you'll notice a difference though.

Does Kevin Bacon hoof dressing waterproof the foot if applied to the sole of the hoof? Only wondered about this because swimmers cover themselves in fat etc to swim the channel and fat seems pretty waterproof. Kevin Bacon hoof dressing is basically animal fat!!

Will turn horse out when its dry like today and has been dry for a while. As soon as it starts raining again he'll stay in until the last puddle has gone from his field!!

I use Naf Rock Hard for soles and Rock Hard supplement. My boys feet have improved tremendously over last 3 months.....even managed to keep his full set of shoes on for 6 weeks, unheard of before.

I also keep him in if its wet to give him and his feet a break

Kevin Bacon is good for the hoof wall which is best kept supple, but you will be better off applying Keratex hoof hardener to the sole. This comes on the advice of my EP who would not normally recommend Keratex as it isn't well regarded among barefoot people. However hardening the sole is the one purpose that he will advise using it for.

(The exception being during the transition to barefoot when natural exfoliation is occurring).
