One of my Arab's pulls his shoes off in the field so he wears over reach boots, I bought some neoprene ones as everything rubs him and they were fine but I think where they get wet and sit on his heals its making them sore and soft and one has split.

I gave it a good wash and put some iodine on them to try and harden and dry them up, I don't really want to put the neoprene boots back on so could put the rubber ones on tonight but then they end up rubbing.

So do you think if I alternated them every night it would help prevent rubs? I don't really know what else I can do I do wash them regularly but am at a bit of a loss what else to try.

Do you know some of the rubber over-reach boots have a really rough ridge on the inside that runs around the pastern area? I never order o/r boots online, I always check each individual pair for this because IME it's the difference between ones that rub and ones that don't (and the ones that aren't made of rubber are horrid when damp).

The rubber ones i have are shires ones and are really soft you can almost fold them in half, he did have them on a while and was fine but then I switched to the neoprene ones thinking they would be better, I might just use the rubber ones and see how he goes at least they will dry out.

I know what you mean about the rigid ones they would definitely rub him but these are really soft.

I can't help on stopping the pulling shoes off as mine are unshod but I wonder about the iodine. I presume you mean on the heel bulbs. If so I think iodine could cause more problems. I am not sure this is an area you can harden. I would use sudocrem. In an ideal world I would use 40% zinc oxide if possible which I believe is used for nappy rash.
If you can get the heel bulbs dry and put the zinc oxide on to deal with the split and any problems could you then smear them with something to keep the water out?
Lanolin? There is some product (greasy) that competitors smear on jumping horses. Cannot remember what it is (lard like) but it may offer protection.

Just looked it up, eventing grease. :D

Thank you I am just putting the silver spray on the heals now I only flushed it with the iodine the first day, they are a bit better now but the constant rain isn't helping them harden up, it looks dry after today so will hopefully help me out.
