Soggy Straw-advice please :-)

Hi all,

This is my first year using straw, as was hoping to try to save money this winter! I have rubber matting but have been using a bale of straw as a bed as well, this has worked well for my gelding but my old mare wees quite a bit and I'm just re-filling the whole bed every day and it's really smelly, I was wondering if I'm going wrong and should be using more straw or swap over to shavings? If I use more straw will it absorb any better or just be more waste?

I would do a shavings base with straw over the top. The shavings will soak up the wee without the higher cost of going totally to shavings. Don't ya just hate messy horses!

Does your stable have good drainage?

try banking more straw and if she's turned out during the day mix the better of the wet stuff with the dry in the morning so it can dry out throughout the day.
one thing i hate is mixed bedding because you dont know where to start

Just an Idea as my mare is on shavings and i use this method.... and have used it with straw in the past it does work.
