Soiling and weeing in the house

Help … My 3 year old rescue male pug has started seeing and soiling in the house when I go out. He is with another dog, they are let outside to go to the loo before I go out. He does even if I am only out for a couple of hours. He is left with the other dog and has the run of the kitchen, bathroom and hall landing and stairs. He was clean before. I crate him at night as he got into a habit of soiling in the bathroom and is now clean at night.

Crate him in the day?

I think I might have to resort to that, but I was wondering if there was another way, seeing as he has been clean

do you check that he has been before you go out. if my younger terrier goes out with the older terrier she isnt thinking, i must have a wee, she is thinking playtime!! so i ket mine out separately so she isnt distracted as she has wee'd a couple of times when ive been out and i worked out why...
