Have decided to move yards (thanks everyone who gave me their thoughts the other day)

I'm an electric fencing virgin : Where do I get a battery from? How often do i have to charge battery? Will one of those solar chargers keep it topped up enough for not to have to attach it mains to charge?

Thanks!

oh rubbish. thats that plan abandoned then but thanks!

I read that I need a leisure battery, may have to get mains charger as well then!
How often will I need to charge battery from mains?
How will I know (when Beasties escape? LOL)

Your energiser should give you an indication of when the battery needs re-charging. The flashing light that shows you it's working will stay on steadily or some energisers have a separate "low battery" indicator light. There are energisers that use 6volt power pack type batteries that fit inside the unit,I've just bought one of those, a Fenceman 6 from SCATS (see below) Make sure the energiser has an on/off switch too, it makes life a lot easier!

Have a look at http://www.hotline-fencing.co.uk/
very nice, helpful people to deal with - you can buy their stuff from SCATS (Mole Valley Farmers). SCATS also do their own electric fencing stuff that's made by Fenceman.

Edited to say - leisure batteries are available from wherever you buy your electric fence stuff from or (usually cheaper) from camping/leisure stores. I bought my leisure battery from Towsure which was much cheaper: http://www.towsure.com/

Use the small internal batteries, or the small 9v external batteries available from derby house or agricultural merchants around £18, they last ages. while you take the rechargable battery home to recharge.

I had a solar one and it was ok but very attention seeking.
It got nicked.
