So you know when you get ‘one of those ideas’ that you plan in the winter to carry out in the spring? Well I’ve thought solar panels maybe a good way of getting electric to my yard? At the moment lights are all battery and I only have a water supply down there. So I have to run a huge extension from the house if I need to plug anything in. It’s not a commercial yard obviously, I only have three stables, a hay/ straw room and a tack room so it’s not big at all. Anyone else done this? Or is it just worth getting an electrician in to just hook me up to the mains?

I have battery lights, one set on each side of the yard. One side has the battery connected up to a small solar panel, that battery has been on there for nearly 2 years.
The other side battery has come home twice this winter for recharging.
I also use a head torch the rest of the time.

If I need proper power, I take our big generator down. That cost about £500 11 years ago, dh uses it for racing. It does the job.

I last got a quote in 2012 for getting power on, £8k. Obviously then I'd need to change all the lighting over, pay a standing charge quarterly too. Decided to carry on as is, far more economical. (Own yard, no liveries these days)

We have a solar system. Panel on roof, wired to leisure battery via a gizmo to prevent over charging, 12 LED lights around and about. All wired into a switch panel so you can switch on the light you want/need and also wired through the energiser to power the electric fence as well. Been installed several years and not a hitch. With good battery powered tools (clippers etc) I wouldn't bother with mains again.

Husband put solar powered lights up at the entrance to the field which was down a muddy track. We currently run our outdoor lights and water pumps etc from solar panels which works really well. In summer he stores power in batteries to boost our energy needs through the darkest months.

We have solar powered lights both for the yard and inside the stables. We do keep updating every now and again but have had some kind of solar for about 12 years. We did have mains electric to the yard but it was quite a dodgy system installed by the previous owner and when we had the house rewired we decide to try solar in the yard. We now have solar powered cctv cameras as well. I think all the lilghts that we have now came from Amazon, although some of the originals came from B&Q. They must have saved us £kkkk in electricity bills.
