Does anyone here use a solarium on their horses? If so, what benefits do you find it has for them? Our horse has arthritis which has been getting slowly worse over the last 2 years, and we find it is more noticable during the winter and in the damp and I was wondering if it might be worth it in the long run for him to invest in one of these? We have started to use thermatex leg wraps which seem to really help him, so on that wave length I thought a solarium might be something to look at?

It's a big expense so I was wondering if it would be worth it :)

Have a look for other threads on here, some very inexpensive homemade versions. I think CPTrayes made one so perhaps search for her thread. On phone so can't link. Think heat lamps hung from roof....

I'm about to put a solarium in my wash box, but I have heat lamps in all my stables and I would suggest you go down that route rather than investing in a solarium.

My 28yr old does brilliantly with his heat lamp through the winter, and they're fab for drying off hunters in the evenings.

This makes me wish I kept my horses at home cos then I could do this too :(

I hope your liveries realise how lucky they are :)

I just made a DIY version. I asked about it and then did a thread about what I'd done. Search the threads I started if you want :)

Thank you for the replies everyone - much appreciated :) I've had a look at heat lamps this afternoon Starzaan, and I think that looks like a better option for us, does your older horse have arthritis as well? I'm glad you've found something that helps them :) and I second that Suziq77 - I wish our old yard owners had been so thoughtful! Vickijay - I will get onto that right now! :)

I am planning to do this shortly I think I am putting a solarium in the wash box and heat lamps in the stables .
There are lots of options do a search on competion riders there's been a few threads there recently.

He has indeed, he's an ex puissance horse so his joints have taken a real hammering over the years bless him. He's sound enough to hunt twice a week and compete regularly at the grand old age of 28 still. I think the heat lamp is a huge help to him.

I'd definitely recommend it.

You mean this one. This is the difference between a horse I cannot ride in winter because he bucks so badly, and the kind, sweet and gentle creature I schooled in 3 degrees and rain this morning.

I needed spine heat, other people have used patio heaters for more generalised heat. I have 4 lights now, head to tail. £20 each off eBay, search for "poultry lights". They come with a plug on and need no special wiring.
