I've bought plenty horses "from the field". All good horses. It just means the owner doesn't want all the hassle of having to ride the horse, have people coming in to ride the horse etc. So long as you can see the horse w/t/c either on the lunge, free in the field and trotted up on a hard surface and on a circle, providing everythings fine there's no reason to not go for the horse. Being sold from the field often can give you a decent horse for significantly less money. If you're concerned in any way either walk away or have it vetted.

My new horse has come from the field 8 years old, hasn't been ridden for a year, stonking 16.3 ID mare, has a good reputation from the hunt and owner has been honest and told me her quirks, he is elderly and his knees have gone so has given up riding, doesn't want to see her stood in the field for another year. He even paid for her to have a full set of shoes on the day before I picked her up so I could get on with it. We have a loan agreement with a view to see how we get on and the possibility of me buying her.

I am really looking forward to getting on her.

I had to re read that... thought you were buying a horse with knees which had gone, thought you were mad!

... not quite that mad ! :)

I'll have her vetted before and £££ changes hands ..... especially her knees lol

She does have cracked heels which I need to sort out and generally needs some TLC but so far shes being a very good girl !!!

We bought one off the field she had been a brood mare 12 years old she is a pink papered oldenburg, we were going to breed with her but I ride her now she is fine, but did have trust issues to start with but with time and a bit of work she ia happy now, but we were lucky it is a risk to buy a riding horse this way I don't think I would do it again might not be so lucky!
