Solo Comb - any opinions?

My boy has quite a thick mane and I'm worried that I may make a mess of it pulling it conventionally, although he doesn't mind his mane being pulled.

So, any opinions on the Solo Comb? Is it easier or are you more likely to make a mess of it?

i personaly have never used one but my friend did on her mare which was fine with its mane being pulled but after using the solo comb she refuses to have her mane pulled or otherwise. Would be interesting to see what everyone else says
 
Yeah they are great for tackling thick long manes, but make sure you backcomb the hair before chopping it and it wont look 'cut'. Have done my friends pony and took off about 6 inches and it looked fab. Could never of pulled it the traditional way.

On really thick manes its hard to make a good job of it, allthough on fairly thick manes I think they do a nice job, We actually broke a solo comb trying to do one horses mane as it was so thick!
 
He isn't too bad, too much for me to tackle pulling but not hugely thick. I think if I do a little bit at a time it should be ok.
 
Try getting a rake first the sort used to thin matted dogs coats. This thins the mane really nicely and I then use a solo comb to shorten it. If you just use a solo comb the thickness will still be there only much shorter, I find using both these things has a good overall outcome.
 
With a thick mane you're 100x better off pulling it because pulling reduces the thickness (by reducing the amount of hair), solo combs cut the hair, so even if you cut it right at the base of the hair, after a couple of weeks you'll have the same thickness at the bottom as you had to start with, whereas it takes a month or so for hairs pulled out to start growing again. Think of the difference between shaving and waxing your legs.
 
I used one on mine at it was fine. She hates her mane being pulled even if you just backcomb. I bought some Smart Tails mane thinners last week they were great for her tail looks really smart but I'me thinking that maybe I should have quit whilst I was ahead on the mane or maybe switch the light on!

I LOVE my Solo comb, have used one for years and it never looks cut. Pulling hairs out at best irritates horses and with my mare (now 8) I have never used anything else. Was amused yesterday at the yard watching another owner twitch her horse and need another person to hold on while pulling as my ned stood quietly and I combed ( you do have to backcomb and there is a technique). I know some horses don't mind pulling but... if there's an easier less annoying method...?
 
i hate solo combs, they make the mane thicker, you are btter pulling a horses mane if you can as it is a much better job. My pony hated having her mane and i had to use the solo comb and i hated it, thankfully my horses are all fine to have their manes pulled!
 
I have a solo comb but I really don't like it. It's just never worked for me. I end up with a thick, spiky mane. I even prefer using scissors to trim at a downward angle if the mane is too thin to pull. I dunno, I just never got on with the solo comb.
 
i think if done properly, a solo comb can do a good job!! very useful for horses who dislike their manes being pulled!!
 
I prefur to pull but my horse bleeds from the crest ( senstive tb ) so i have to use a solo comb and and its not that bad but would like to consider this mane rake thing?. as even if its shorter its still fairly thick ( youd think her mane belonged the a welsh pony ).

Oyster i know do tail ones but can you buy a mane one to thin from the underside? I shall be doing more platting soon so cant be getting into a an argument with her name everytime i have to tackle it.
 
My horse has a very thin mane and is 'sensitive' the solo comb has been great for him, trimmed mane - no hassle.
 
I have pulled Chloe's man using a pulling comb and a solo comb - I am leaving her mane until I can get a solo comb simply because she gets VERY cross when I don't use it - it's very good, can't fault it really, if there is any fault tbh I think it would be in the wonky lines of the 'workman'.

I thought it brilliant. Used it on my TB who has a very thin mane and it looks great. But yes, you must back comb first. Not sure how good it would be on a thick mane - as normally go through about one a year as the handle sticks or the blades go blunt pretty quickly
 
Our welshie had an amazing thick mane that stood out at right angles from his neck.

However we tried to comb it the thickness remained
We used to solo comb it a bit just to keep it under control, however since using a tail rake on it its been brilliant. We raked it on the offside and now he can have his natural 'welsh' look without it becoming a total bush from the horrible thickness!
