Solo Comb

I know this has probably been discussed before but I am expecting delivery of my FIRST EVER Solo Comb (version 3, if that means anything to anyone).

I want to use it on my filly who's mane has already been shortened to about 4 to 5 inches long using a razor comb.
I'd like to shorten it by no more than another inch but thin it out along the upper part of her neck ready for plaiting up in 2 weeks time.

I'm aware it has to be used correctly to achieve good results. My question is, does it come with really good 'idiot-proof' instructions or are there any extra tips I should know before I start?

it's pretty fool proof really - there are instructions but you use it almost like a pulling comb but obviously without the painful yanking out of the hair! Have fun

I used it once

and this is what his mane looks like now

Basically all the shortend mane hairs are now sticking up straight like a hogged mane... and have pushed the rest of his mane over to the other side!!!!

He also freaked out over the clicking noise, pulled back and fell over the mounting block

silly arse!!!

I've used one for 8 years on Ralph, he's a rescue and would not let me pull his mane. The solo comb has been a life saver and probably one of my greatest investments and I used it yesterday..............

He has a loverly long mane on the other side now though...... just looks like a flippin hedgehog from the left!!!!

I am going to wash and plait it all over tomorrow... it is now about 4" on the short bits so it may come over!!!!

Totally agree, my daughters pony won't have his mane pulledwith a comb but will happily stand while I 'solo' it!

I have to say i really hate them, i find if you use a thinning knife then most horses dont object as you dont pull the hair out i sort of back comb it and then hold the hair with one finger and cut it with th other, if that maks sense, whenever i use a solo comb it looks as if i've cut it so not a big fan really! Maybe you could use one of those rakes? Should give more of a natural look.

I preferred using thinning scissors very sparingly to pulling or using a solocomb as my mare despised both lol.

I love my solo comb, as my old mare would nearly kill you if you tried to pull her mane, and with the solo comb she just goes to sleep an lets me get on with it.
Have to say with all new horses that come in i try pulling their manes and if they are not happy, i get the solo comb straight out as it takes the stress away and makes it easier and happier for every one
