Young horse was fitted with a native Smart saddle by a Solutions fitter last spring. He's a German Riding Pony and the native fitted slightly better than the non-native one. Backed him slowly over summer and he was very happy in it. Turned away for 5 months but now ridden work has begun again. This is the issue: some times I get on and ride and he's fine; other times he's swishing his tail and kicking out with a back leg - clearly not happy. Occasionally I've solved the issue by loosening the girth a little. I have felt his back all over and no tight muscles or painful spots. Possibly slight soreness over the wither. I wonder if the fact that he's now 5 and perhaps has sprouted more of a wither might be the issue? The pommel of the Smart saddles is pretty rigid. Any suggestions anyone on how to raise the saddle to clear the wither? If I just put shims in front, will that tip saddle back and cause a different problem?

PS I have booked saddle fitter but she can't come for ages so just looking for a temporary fix.

Solution are best to advise - I think they are fitting by photos at the minute.

In this situation in the past I’ve lifted the whole saddle up with another dsp pad. A front shim will affect the balance.

Thanks for replying. I'll give that a go. He's very good at telling me when he's comfortable and when he's not, so I'll soon know!
