Some advice on what to do with rescue mare

Ah, but just maybe we can see through billshit and you can not!

Your right, there has been far too many trolls lately
It sounds bad but when i see a post now which has been posted by someone with few posts it always makes me think twice.
These trolls spoil it for everyone else who has a genuine concern/problem

Sorry OP if your not a troll, but as above ^^

Blimey, she's small isn't she? How tall would you say she is, OP?

If you haven't done already I would get a proper nutritionalist's advice, and obviously the vet to check and talk through worming programme (with her I'd be tempted to do faecal egg counts so you are only putting chemicals in if necessary).

Ditto others who have said just chill out with her for the meantime :)

Oh patsie, I fear I must agree with you that tonight I am not a good judge of character. I replied to the op assuming it isn't a troll as I am in a good mood and it would be no skin off my nose to give the poster the benefit of the doubt. For the same reason I took you off ui tonight as I guessed your post might be in reply to mine, and I was curious about if you were being any more civil these days.

Now my only regret is that I don't seem to be able to turn ui back on with this stupid mobile version of the forum.

Hi, i have taken on quite a few rescue cases in the past and im hoping by telling you about my most recent one it will give you hope with yours! firstly id like to start by saying ignore the bitchy people on here, some people are just way to up their own a***s and just not helpfull! i think you are doing a great job already by asking for advice etc to make sure you are doing the right thing! my most recent case was an abused young stallion who was petrified by humans, he had been beaten, starved and was very ill with worm burden, where i found him to he was put in a cattle crush to get a rope on him causing heematomas to add to his already beaten and bleeding head and body, i brought him home had all the necassarys done, vets, worming etc and had to introduce him to a diet slowly not to cause him to colic, he had decided all humans were bad and attacked me on more than 1 ocassion (i wear the scars!). He will be ready for breaking this autumn as a happy and healthy horse :-) this 1 took me nearly a year of patience, consistancy and bruises but he is a changed character. just be patient, it doesnt happen over night! make sure she needs to be handled all the time for any reason, even walking to the feed bowl etc but i do suggest letting her eat in peace so not to crowd her all the time etc you sound like your doing the main bonding bit with the brushing etc :-) i wish you lots of luck and hope by hearing about my boy you have faith you will get there with yours :-)

I stopped reading after the third page..

I AM NOT A TROLL!!

I gave her a really good brush for about an hour, I used a shedding blade and my camera on my phone is rubbish, makes her look blacker than she really is, Ill video if its what you guys need!!

I did tie her correctly and will take a video to prove how I do so if this is necessary, I also have more pictures of her before I got her. They said they were recent pictures, maybe they were not? I didnt check I didnt think them suspicious, but she was skinny.

I HAVE wormed her already, was the first thing I did! I didnt have a worm count I shall admit, that will have to be my next step, in some lights in the flesh she still looks very skinny but giving her a good brush, tidying her up a bit really made a big difference, she was matted and knotted all over the place before I got her.

I ask for advice and get accused of being a troll, why does this happen so much on this forum? I have been hovering for a while reading peoples advice but realised I really needed too ask my own and these are the replies I get?

Thanks to those of you that have helped and given great advice, I will be following it and will also be keeping yo updated on how she is doing...

Just for the record I wasnt going to start any massive stuff with her parelli wise, I was literally just going to touch her all over and see if she accepted me, and wondered what other ''bonding'' exercise would be good. I dont want to work her, I just want to show her I care!

OFGS, she/it is a bleddy troll. You wont see this Natch as you have me on UI. You are not the best judge of character.

I actually cant believe people can be so nasty. What proof have you got I am a troll? I dont actually fully know what a troll is? But I am gbuessing its someone who posts topics unneccessarily to waste time....

But then doesnt that make you a troll for replying back unnecccessarily therefore wasting time?

I want advice because I look at this mare and I feel guilt and just want to cry because she is in such a state and I don't really know where to start with helping her, the day I live under a bridge and Im fat and ugly, I certainly shant be posting on here!

Firstly ignore nasty posters they were obviously not taught if they have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all!

Using a clicker is a nice way to build up trust in things, try spraying the fly spray on your hand if she accepts the spray noise click and treat her and rub it on, you will be able to build up to gradually getting closer then spraying on her less sensative areas while clicking and treating. If she freaks out take a step back to what she can accept. You can use this method to de-sensitise to all manor of things.
Good luck with her she is lovely:¬)))

Sorry for triple post, on my phone and its so early that I accidentally typed always tie her up!

08.25 is hardly early! Welcome to the life of a horse owner....

Please ignore those on here that have called you a troll - some of them just cannot be bothered to post nicely, informatively and helpfully!

My advice would be to just spend a whole load of time with her. Grooming her, leading her out in hand, picking up her feet etc. When you lead her ensure she is walking at your shoulder - if she pulls back or forwards correct her immediately - small issues turn into much bigger ones. Make sure you are consistent with what you ask but be very precise about what you want - don't let her get away with bad behaviour. Sit in her paddock and read a book.

Sprays and horses - loads of horses hate sprays and some areas of a horse are much more sensitive than others! Spray on hand and rub hand on horse is the answer!

As for the leadrope picture above - sorry but no amout of wriggling on the end of a rope could make it that long - tight yes - long no - sorry.

You sound very young and also inexperienced - please take care and move her to a larger yard with experienced people who can assist you with the backing process later on down the line!

Where did you get her from?

Tip 1 - step AWAY from Parelli, full stop. Unless you want her ruined forever.

Tip 2 - Watch Monty Roberts until you fall in love. The way he talks to horses, his body action around them. Learn it.

Tip 3 - do nothing but groom, feed and talk to your mare this summer. You'll see an amazing difference.

Dorey had a flid with the fly spray a while ago, so I just got talking to her about what an idiot she was being and last time I sprayed her she stood beautifully. None of this parelli rubbish, just having a nice chat.

(Oh, and I've had a rescue before - took over 6 months to get a bond, but when I did, it was immensely strong until the day she died. Most rewarding thing ever!)

Tip 1- Monty Roberts will teach you pressure, pressure, pressure it will take you 6 months to get anywhere, apparently.

Tip 2 - If you embrace Parelli, do it properly, wholeheartedly and you and your horse will really have a proper, trusting, meaningful, relationship with you.

Tip 3- This little horse needs more than just grooming and feeding.

Do you not have a stable to bring her into, much easier to handle, feed and groom inside. Tying up to a fence really is not the way to go. Also you have tied your halter incorrectly, that knot will eventually just fall out. Did you not get instructions with it on how to tie it correctly. Having said that I dont think I have ever seen a horse put on that much weight on in a week before!

Pastie2 - forgive me for saying this but you aren't an old bat of a dressage judge are you? Just you seem to be happy the knack of writing a whole load of quite negative things without thinking it might be nice to put something positive in!

I think OP is amazing, she has taken on quite a daunting project and is freely asking for advice, which is a pretty good start and clearly would like to get it right. I think there is some good advice on here (the slower you take it at the beginning, they quicker you get there in the end!), really trust your own judgement, forgive yourself if you make a mistake - but make sure you learn from it and avoid negative people!!

Good luck!

Agree with the above, it seems like this little mare has fallen on her feet! Good luck :)
